Post subject: Shopping in Shangai

Planning on going for a few days. need a few tips on which store to go to buy some "cheap" high quality dvds. am planning on bringing back to canada, are there any issues at canada customs? would like to buy some juicy coiture(?) or any other designer knockoffs. any suggestions and tips would be appreciated.

Knockoffs...
Two Choices.
- Science and Technology Metro Stop in Pudong.
- Feng Xiang Fashion and Accessory Mall at 580 Nanjing Lu (Nanjung Lu and Chengdu Lu) Puxi . Better selection in my opinion

Yes there are "customs issues" as it's illegal to import counterfeit products, but of course, whether or not you get caught is a different matter. I bring back DVDs each trip, but in modest quantities.

Depends what you define as cheap. On Dagu Lu out the back (or front depending on which side you live) of Top of City there are 2 dvd stores that face one another across the street. one is about 4 times the size of the other.

Both sell your average DVD for 7 RMB. However if you bought a lot you could easily get them to do say 5 or 6 RMB each.
But more importantly the quality is always spot on usually.

Stay AWAY from the street vendors. They will usually always give you the first release of any given movie which is usually Cam jobs.

In the stores I mentioned above they (usually) only stock movies that have reached DVD standard pirate releases.

Take all your DVD's to the post office. They'll stick them in a box for you, send them by surface and it'll be cheap. If customs confiscates them, at least you won't be fined!

You haven't done this for a while, have you ? It's against the regulations to send CD's out of China now. Doesn't matter if they are commercial or homemade, no CD's. The post office is supposed to look in the box, too. So if you want to do that you have to discguise them in some way.

Otherwise yeah, that's a good method Smile

Yeah, the post offices are all different ... when you find a good one, keep going there ! Mine used to be the same way but one day a Directive must have come down. Now I have to hide DVD's in a t-shirt or something, ran my costs way up Sad

As with many things in China, there's no consistency.
