| Post subject: How to make CNY20 thousand a month in Shanghai |
Is there any possible for a foreigner to make 20,000 a month in Shanghai as a teacher? Or what kind of job for an expericned teacher who has English lingust and Computer degree?
Sorry, it sounds like a crazy question. But I really do need to see your guys advice.
My bf's from U.S. and teaching in some H.Z. university. He makes less than 10,000 now.
But he has some finacially problem in U.S and has pay off some debt.
Like pay 12 grand in one year.
If it's impossible, so he will have to leave China. |

Is your walking wallet/greencard leaving you??
Maybe you should start to look for your next opportunity.
And yes there's a way for a teacher to make more than 20000CNY a month and thats actually to be a qualified teacher (DEGREE Level) with experience and then apply for a post at a foreign school or university teaching something thats in demand. |

Expat English teachers at virtually any university do not make anywhere near 20k RMB per month. Neither do the vast majority of those working at private centers.
In most cases, to make that much money they'd either have to be running around like a dog to various non-related jobs or else be working for the American School of similar international schools.
To get in at the American School they'd need to have teaching credentials from their home state including, normally, a masters in education. They have, at times, accepted lower standards. |

^ SAS. But he'll need to have a degree in education and be a licensed teacher already in the US. And even then. |

Some of the English business training schools pay salaries at around 20k. I have a friend who used to teach for one of these companies as a part-timer and was making around 40k at busy times of the year. He said that at slow times it could drop to around 10k but when he averaged the salary for the year it was just over 20k. |

You call someone who makes less than RMB10K "walking wallet"? If the girl is after money only she can probably do better than that. |

Yes it's possible with some of the specialised language schools that also do business training type courses if he's any good and he will probably need to do quite a lot of extra hours to make it. At a university of course, it is highly unlikely.
Having said that, isn't there anything else he is trained for? Is English all he has? |

Have you tried the larger English schools like Wall Street Institute / English First / Webster (or something like that)? |

You can get pretty high hourly rates if you have some decent connections, eg tutoring wealthy businessmen, getting jobs at certain private schools, I knew of one private school that paid 500/hr, problem is you get a few hours here and there and as underh20 said, end up having to run around between schools all over town. If you're willing to do that, and work some annoying hours including weekends, I think 20k is definitely possible IF you can find the right jobs. It's all about the guan xi. |

If he needs to make rmb20k per month in China to take care of his financial issue in the US, then he would certainly need to make substantially more than that in South Korea to do the same - cost of living there is much higher. |

a mate of mine has taught in China and Korea- he reckons in Korea he used to go out drinking and eating a lot more, and still saved a lot of money. Here he doesn't make ends meet and is dipping into his Korean savings |
