| Post subject: Adventures in China sourcing |
So anyway one of my business partners was here last night, he doesn't come around often but he still keeps an office here. He had to come up because of some problem with his supplier of pool toys for kids. The vendor, for reasons only known to him, made them with a pinhole in the bottom. Hence, they won't float. What good are pool toys that don't float? So the customer in the States finds a suitable glue to fix the problem. Of course, they don't have this glue in China, and they can't import it, either. So the factory goes and finds some glue and makes the repair to 100,000 pieces. My buddy comes to inspect the goods..."where's your data sheets on this glue? Where'd it come from?" Factory says, "oh, we don't have any". Great! Buddy says, "so where's this glue? Where'd you source it from?" Turns out they went to the convenience store outside the factory gate and bought a bunch of superglue. The factory manager tries to convince my friend there's nothing wrong and can he please pay for the goods now. My buddy picks up one of the tubes of glue and the manager reads it (all in Chinese) and says it's fine. Buddy looks on the back of the glue and there's a FREAKING SKULL AND CROSSBONES on the label. True story. |

I'm sorry... but that story brought tears of laughter to my eyes. Remember all too well dealing with issues like that (sourcing factories to make approved flame retardant infant items was a nightmere)... but a pinprick in the bottom of a pool toy? HAHAHA! Just be grateful this factory wasn't making flotation devices for aircraft, boats or water wings... |

How about 50,000 pcs of exterior plywood made with interior glue.
100,000 50 lb boxes of roofing nails that the heads fall off.
4,000,000 food containers that leak.
100 dirtbikes whose front brakes don't work. |

Two questions:
- Isnt it that molded plastic toys all have a pinhole at the bottom?
- Isn't it that it will float anyway?
Go to the store, check and try in your bathtub.
Very stupid story in my opinion. |

No, not all molded plastic toys have holes in the bottom. And the ones that do will trap the water eventually, and become "ganky" and need to be thrown out. Some do have a hole purposely put there so you can suck in and blow out water through them, but again, a certain amount of water will be trapped in it, and the toy will have to be thrown out sooner rather than later. It's better to get toys without a hole in them I would say, just for the health reasons (who wants old mold water in their pool or bathtub?)
Depending on how big the hole is, they should still float, you are correct. And the chances of getting water inside are lessened provided you're not holding the toy under the water and squeezing it.
All without googling. And I'm an English teacher too! Although I question what the merits of holes vs no holes in plastic toys has to do with teaching phonics. |

glue is glue. Who needs heads? What, you put wet food in food containers? no one actually uses front brakes on those ... |

all plastic molded products have a pin hole or a small knob. Its how the product is released from the mold after its made. |

what? they are knocked out of the mold with ejector pins or knock out pins. The little hole is usually from the injection point or gate and this can be controlled by part design and process. no need for holes ... unless i'm missing something here ... maybe you are thinking of venting which is to release gas between the material injected and tool steel surface |
