| Post subject: Must do/see in Shanghai |
holy crap, what do people do here during the day if ur not working.............?
Hey everyone - looking for your opinions on must sees/dos in shanghai for some friends ( of 25-28 yr olds kiwi/british lads) who are over for a week.
Of course i have the bar scene planned out already, but they might want more than just a nightlife, hence i don't know too much more than the bar scene here...
If you have suggestions about some stuff to check out i would love to know - cool and fun, even weird, crazy, whatever...
However for their first full day in Shanghai i thought i'd give them a real treat. I will be at work, so i'll leave them a few essentials on the kitchen table to help them get about.
1. 1000 won (small denominations)
2. a street map of Beijing (1986 edition)
3. a phrase book (my old japanese one with the missing front cover)
4. an american cell phone with a chinese sim card
5. and a note, to meet me on kowloon road for dinner |

Yuyuan Gardens, Pearl Tower, Peoples Square, Nanjing street mall, Shanghai Museum.
Other things that may be of interest... The Aquarium, Zhouzhuang.
To be honest, there isn't much to do and see here. |

You might also want to suggest to them going Karting.
809 Zaoyang Lu
near Metro Line 3, Jinshajiang Lu Station
枣阳路809号
近地铁3号线金沙江路站
http://www.kartingchina.com/
6222-2880, 6285-7778
Open from 2pm (when they might wake up from the night out at the bars) until 2am. There is even a bar there if they want to safely drink and drive around). I went during CNY and it was a good time. |

Hey!
you could also take some mandarin lessons. It is really fun to experience and very useful.
Enjoy!

Do one day tours to Hangzhou, Suzhou or Zhouzhuang. Visit the Bund, Taikang Lu, Xintiandi for lunch, Old Shanghai, fabric market if they are into custom made clothings, Wending Lu if they are into artist etc. They can do a walking tour of French Concession or from Yuyuan to Fangbang Zhong Lu (Old Shanghai) to Xichang Lu (t¡bet St) and then to Xintiandi. All depends on what your visitors are interesting in. |

You could try the sex museum that is at the end of the Bund Sightseeing Tunnel. |

There's a regular museum there too?
Must've missed that on the trip there.... |

Other places that i've taken people to are as follows:
Jade Budda temple
Longhua temple & pagoda (there is a cool insect market just down the road as well)
Fake market / pearl market (variety of locations)
Hot pot dinner
Cocktails at the top of Jin Mao tower (alternative to Pearl Tower)
River cruise - not that great, but it passes an hour
Acrobat show at shanghai centre (daily show at 7.30pm)
Massage - say no more to which variety they choose.
Sending them to nice restaurants each day will also give them a flavour for China. You could send them to a different style place each day.
Hope that helps. |

I'm a 29 year old Brit so should have the same tastes.
Agree with the insect market, I've also enjoyed climbing the Nanpu bridge, taking the ferry from Pudong / Puxi (or back) and the bund tourist tunnel. The marriage market in People's Park at the weekend, flying kites in Pudong is fun (after you go to the fake market), the circus is OK if they want a night off the booze (or a slow start on the booze anyway).
[on drinking: you have to take them to bonbon or a similar open bar deal by the way, and the view from Captain's Hostel is as good as any fancy bar on the Bund, and half the price.]
I don't apologise for all of the links to my site, cos they're all relevant! |

Taikang lu is a great place to take visitors.
Just go down Taikang lu til you reach number 248, then walk up the alleyway (past the locals doing their washing and stuff!) and the alleyway opens out into a really cool lane - many cafes/ shops and photo opportunities! Definitely a hit with visitors. |

In addition to what stokiegal said, Taikang Lu has small galleries and shops mostly related to art, design, fashion, but I think its much more appealing in nicer (ie warmer) weather since it's outdoors |
