I work out of my home doing freelance editing for English websites and documents. Recently looking for more work - and have applied to several want ads on sh.expat and other job sites. But no one seems to reply, even to acknowledge that they received my application. Is this normal? Please advise.

That explains the poor quality of English translations and adverts I still see.. especially those supposedly aimed for the foreign market, like real estate...
The most blatant one is at a certain XTD billboard touting a certain upmarket residential development. Go see it and roll your eyes in horror.
But seriously, these guys wouldn't know squat. You'd have to pick up the phone and call the agency yourself and really sell your skills. You have to really talk to these dunderheads at advertorial and print agencies and really show them that writing isn't just about lifting or plagarizing whole passages out of "huckleberry finn".
