| Post subject: Air Canada's strict luggage allowance |
Air Canada has a very strict luggage rule - checked in luggage must not be over 23 kg ea piece (economy class). So even if you are allowed 2 pieces each and you only have one piece and it is 30 kg, you have to get another suitcase and split them. Their union is protecting their employees sore backs.
For business, ea piece allowed is 32kg.
I believe other airlines are much more lenient so long as you don't exceed total weight allowed.
Edited to kgs. |

Try getting any more than 32kgs through most Australian airports. The unions will not allow workers to lift any more.
Coming back from our Christmas holiday, the wife had stuffed as much as possible into the suitcases, one was 33kgs and we had to remove items from it, we were travelling business class too, I guess the extra kilo could have caused a nasty spinal injury.
Then going into the immigration area they actually weighed my carry on luggage, it was 12kgs and the limit is 7kgs. I wasn't in the mood so told 'em I travel all the time in asia with more and just walked away.
On another business trip, I was leaving from Manchester, they refused to let me in to the immigration area because I had two pieces of hand luggage, one piece was my laptop, the other a suit jacket on a coat hanger inside a very light cover. Business class passengers are allowed two pieces of hand luggage, but the moron security guard was on a power trip and refused me entry, even said dumb stuff like "you can put one inside the other", but then that is still 2 pieces.....go figure.
This is one reason I still like Asia..... |

46 kg is quite a bit of luggage. Most other airlines, as far as I know, don't let you take 2 pieces of 23kg, maybe just 1 of 32kg.............. I hate Air Canada as much as the next Canadian, but that's because of their service, staff, policies and lies, not because of their luggage restrictions. |

I always take two 32kg bags, I used to fly United, but am moving away from them. Twice I've flown Air Canada, always with overweight bags. I have had to pay, but there's been no problem getting them checked.
Is there something unique about the fact that if you have one 30kg bag you'd pay an overweight fee? I think all the US airlines do this. Maybe I'm misunderstanding your post, but I don't think Air Canada's policy is very strict -- it's very standard and uses practices that are very common in the US. |

I've always gotten away with overweight luggage with Air Canada. Of course they were just a few pounds overweight. I was a poor student and I had a lot of books! Some agents are nice and they'll let it go.
I flew JAL once and the limit was 20kg. My luggage was 36kg!!! They didn't make me pay, just gave me a "warning". I highly recommend JAL. |

Some airlines are completely inflexible about their carry on rules. Sound like Air Canada is one of them.
Many times it is at the discretion (and mood) of whatever agent is checking you in.
Am constantly bringing overweight bags back from THailand. Couple of trips ago I came back via Taiwan....business trip.
Checked the bag (26kg) on Air China (20kg economy limit). No issue. Same bag from Taiwan to HK....got whacked for over weight.
United has been pretty flexible on International as has ANA.
JAL....hit or miss.
MU International....hit or miss.
Flying in the Pacific...
Quite honestly....I think sometimes it just depends on the english abilities of the agent also. |

Airlines in Europe always had different luggage allowances from America, say 20kgs compared to 32 kgs, but you could always pay excess baggage to cover the extra weight. Increasingly, airlines are restricting the weight of the bags because of health and safety regulations rather than a way of making extra money....if a bags over, it doesn't go. |
