| Post subject: Redeeming Star Alliance points |
Question:-
1. How to get "partner airlines" tickets. Example: I have Aeroplan Air Canada points. Trying to get to Kota Kinabalu but the website just spit out that they don't go there. But SIA and sister company go there.
2. Alternatively, I can fly SH to SIN, then get to KK via Air Asia cheap airfare but would I be able to check my luggage all the way from SH to KK using different airlines and getting tickets separately?
3. Is it possible to choose a direct flight to say Melbourne/Sydney via Air China which is also a star alliance partner now. The Air Canada website keeps showing flights with connection in HKG which I am trying to avoid.
4. Similarly, trying to get direct flights to Bangkok via points. And then get cheap tickets to Phuket. Same questions as #1 & #2.
Anyone redeemed Star Alliance points before to KK or Phuket from SH, would appreciate your comments. TIA.
TIA. |

Can't you book through Air Cananda? Whenever I've redeemed Star Alliance points, I've always booked through the carrier with whom the majority of points were accumulated. If they didn't service the requested area, they have always been able to book through a member of the alliance. One phone call, no problem. It may be worth calling the Air Canada office in Canada rather than dealing with a local office. For Bangkok, can't you use the Royal Thai partnership? |

My Star Alliance points are on United.
Have used them on several different partner airlines for free tickets. You have to call the Airline Star Allaince redemption numer....For me, I call United to use points for any other Star allainace free flights.
The number for Air Canada should be on the back of your card....
For Phucket....Check on how many points and flights on TG all the way there. See if it is less points to just go to Bangkok. Check air Asia site to see how much to buy a ticket. Pick the best combination of Points/Cash..... |

I can answer two of ur questions from personal experiance(bad news for both i am afraid):
2. No. U cannot do that if different airlines are involved, unless you use star alliance or some other group/agency. Then they will do the luggage transferring themsleves.
4. Redeeming points for booking flights can only be done if ur originating point is IN Thailand. Eg. B'kok-Phuket-B'kok or Phuket-B'kok-Phuket is possible.
P.S. I am a silver card holder of Star Alliance. |

I have star alliance credits through Thai. Can easily used it but, have to go through Bangkok to the final destination. They have a mileage calculator in their handbook to determine the total miles of your travel and the corresponsing air miles you need. Thai has a great offer to gold members that you need only half miles when redeeming the flight a month before and after your birthday. |

I'm sure Air Canada explains how to redeem everything on their site (United does). Calling them in Canada would be the best way, I believe.
As far a checking luggage through to final destination using different carriers/tickets, that should be no problem. When you check in at origination just tell them all of your airlines, flight numbers and final destination. They can just print out luggage tag with that info and stick it on your bag, voila, bag at final destination. |

Don't try and do it online. Pick up the phone and call Air Canada. I was trying to get two free trips to China, couldn't work out the availability online, but in ten minutes on the phone with Air Canada, I was booked on United flights and good to go. The phone reps can easily see what's available through their Alliance partners, and can book it. |

Only some partner airlines can be booked online. For the rest (ie. more complicated routes), you need to call Aeroplan reservations. |
