| Post subject: don't use dazhong moving company! |
hired them to move some stuff. when it was done, my aiyi checked the van to make sure all was out. there was a small box in the corner that one of the moving men said was full of moving blankets, and so she took their word. later we found that the man who stayed inside the van during transport, went through my boxes, and hid items under the blankets.
when called the company to complain and get items back, he hung up the phone. i think this is an ongoing scheme. yes, we should have checked underneath the blankets, but moving itself is tiring and chaotic, and my aiyi didn't even think to question the man. just watch out!! (the moving men even tried to 'up' the price of the moving when we were done, thinking any old laowai will just pay and not question. get your quote in writing so you can show them!! |

hate to hear about your experience.
but as you said, it is a rule of thumb to always check the moving van and have the blankets shaken out.
surprising the company hung up on you... dazhong is a reputable company (probably why you chose them in the first place). have you called back? also, do you have proof that the items were taken from your cartons (ie, opened cartons, etc). one of the easiest things to do for some moves is to purchase a scale and weigh each box before the movers arrive. keep the weights on a piece of paper and weigh each carton as it is brought into the new abode to ensure that they match up. you don't let the movers know that the cartons have been weighed in advance, but you let them see you doing it as they unload. |

#1) There are a lot (a *lot*) of fake Dazhong moving companies out there. The real one: 96811.
#2) We had a good experience with Gongxing movers recently so I'll recommend them here. No "price-upping" and great attitude, cheerful and efficient. They are Shanghai's other big moving company. Their number is 96964. |

make sure the people who come are REAL! There are LOTS of fake companies out there with real company names but are not the real thing. last year there was a report out showing that more than a third of the moving companies operating are not licesed. A rep from GongXing was quoted saying that they get reports every week about trucks painted just like theirs doing work under their name. I don't doubt it happens to Da Zhong as well.
Anyhoe, warning to everyone, CHECK THE TRUCK! Theft happens everywhere especially where socio-economic gaps are so large, the temptation is too much sometimes so do your part to keep them honest. |

Check the truck ? too late! Now go to trucking company with a baseball bat and smash a few things. You will get your belongings. Thats the only way to handle it. They don't think you will do anything and most people don'r. I keep a bat in my car. When you get cheated you bring out your Barry Bonds model Louieville Slugger. If you actually use it you could get 15 days in jail, but It might be worth it. |

The last time I moved I numbered all of my belongings: I bought these stickers from Carrefour and wrote the number on them and stick it on each pieces of my stuff: boxes, suitcases, buckets...I also had four friends guarding my stuff at various points.
The price up thing happened to both me and my friend, i just paid 50 kuai more as i did have twice as many boxes as i told the operator, but when the movers tried to up the price half way through the move for my friend, she just refused to pay and told them and bring back her stuff from the truck, and she won. |

For those with experience using such moving companies, can they move your stuff in a passenger van? I have a couple of suitcases and small boxes (no furniture) to move, and will have a friend helping me. Thought it would be most convenient if we could ride with the driver from point of pickup to final destination (all within Shanghai). Thanks! |

The little box trucks are for rent and you can ask someone to call one of the companies that has them to book them in advance for you. The driver will do basic load/unlad but the rest is up to you. Has worked fine for several friends that I've helped move. |

Used them yesterday, no issues what so ever. Phoned them up and they were there within an hour and a half. The driver doesn't help so would be best to move with friends if you have a lot of stuff. One person waited to keep an eye on the truck (because of what was said above) but do not think there would have been an issue.
Jing'an-Pudong near century park was about 75rmb and was all done within a couple of hours. Would use them again and would recommend them. |

Holy crap, 75RMB?! Imagine how much this would cost in the U.S.! Probably $750! When I moved in the US I picked up day laborers from the Home Depot parking lot and even that cost $100!
Jeez next time I move instead of making my brother help I'll just use Dazhong (but keep a close eye). |
