izanami,

i think they have the stuff you need, but from my experience, though they might have the products you want, they may be seling them under a different brand which you are not familiar with, therefore you may need to try your luck or simply just buy till you find the brand you like...

so its still the safest to bring some from home and if you cant find any that you like here, at least you still have stock to survive the days when you need them... and stock them up again the next time you return home, or get your visitors from Spore to bring lots for you!

Ok, and now Oyster floods my head with Melbourne...I miss my Thresherman's Bakehouse! And that crazy place Papa Gino's!

Hideout Cafe's overrated though but it's still nice to walk around Fitzroy...Brunswick Street, no? Or is it on Smith? Oh put me back on a tram NOW! I'll even buy a ticket!

Yeah I brought back packet spices/bak kut teh mix/green curry crap...So chances are, it's better to stock stock stock! I need to know where to buy gula melaka and hei bi hiam! Feel like making prawn noodles!

hei bi hiam - do u mean salty shrimps? or shrimp paste?

going off for the night... see you guys tomorrow. will PM you on my details so you can keep me posted on the makan outing.

take care and have a good night ahead.

going to XTD, lookout for me if you are there!

Wah kow so many makan kakis here all of a sudden? Count me in!!!

Aussiebc: yeah both Crystal Jade and Nooch are from $inkapore. (Nooch does not seem to be doing too well unfortunately)

BreadTalk now has two stores in town. When they first opened in Raffles City (not another $inkapore investment?!), all the $hanghainese were queue-ing for it like crazy... gawwwwd it was unbelievable.

Pasta Fresca is also from $inkapore by the way. And I heard Sakae Sushi is coming into town soon.

Muahaha...

Amazing - I logged off for a few hours - and come back to an avalanche of postings on this thread - obviously on a subject so close to so many people's hearts!

By the way, I believer Sakae Sushi is already in town. Saw it at Mei Luo Chen ay Xu Jia Hui.

I will be working in Raffles City actually. And yes, it's a Singapore investment. We can never escape that 'Raffles' heritage can we?

Nooch sucks. I always thought the food was very average and over-priced. The branch at Raffles Citylink is doing badly too.

Dear all,

Wow! (mouth wide open, saliva dripping and eyes popping!)

Guess there are many crazy folks like me in Shanghai who loves to eat.

Guys and Gals, don't kill me, I went there last night... I had to! Thanks to Meepoktah, he makes me go bananasssss with all those dishes flying in my mind. I had yuan yang(not the same as in KL) , belachan kangkong(so so), curry fishhead(taste as good) and Vinegar Pork leg(yummy). Sigh... I wish i can have more but there is only 2 of us. Well, the GM there, fellow Malaysian give us free dessert... Lain zi, Mu'er with Hong Zao... oh!

Ok, before I am killed by you people. Let's do it this coming Friday 20 Feb 2004. Tell me (PM) the best time and best place to meet. Majority wins. Eh, I dun exactly knows where is the nearest metro (pai sei) as usually I reach there by car. So, Lu Ban Road... tell you what, I will check it out later and put more info here again.

So far, I have received PM and confirmation from Siao Kia, Aussiebc and Wenlee. MeePoktah (your name makes me droool, I hate you!) confirmation via thread... Anybody else? Oyster, this Friday you can? After that, we will see that the old birds bring us to party!

Oh.... Asam laksa.... Sigh... Now I understand the statement - "Its better than sex!"

Ok folks,

For faster response, please send your contact details to wesleytham@yahoo.com.sg as I will be out for business lunch today. I will tabulate the attendance list and finalise it by 12 noon Friday. so send in your confirmation soon, please your contact number please. I will do sms confiormations.

Then think what you want to eat on Friday night... average cost per person should not be more than 80RMB (in fact 50RMB) should be enough. It depends how big the crowd is. Also if we reach the 2 digit attendance, I will be able to get a private room just for ourselves.

*choke choke splutter*
Meepoktah today damn sian. But the meepok will still be bouncy and springy! HAH!

And how the hell did you guess I was smoking somewhere?! You got the CCTV hooked on me?

Hokay, Friday on...definitely on! Otherwise meepok is just going to soak in some wine vat and grow mould.

Wesley, I'll forward you the contact details of people who have e-mailed me (hey, nice!) and you DA MAN, will mass SMS/e-mail us yeah?

Meepok feels like throwing up today...

Oh, and Wes, if you're wondering where aussieBC went to, she's gone shopping at Pudong with her cousins this afternoon! Yup, we met up last night for dinner - rather she saw me eat/chainsmoke...awesome chick I tell you, she is! Sorry Wenny about not informing you earlier, but I guess, there'll be other times.

So...so...so I'll see you all soon!

*meepoktah doubles over and throws up more meepok*
That should kill your craving for meepok Wesley!

Fix the time to go?? I AM GOING with you, guys. Shanghainese greasy food... I seriously need a break. So far I have been trying to cook my own food at home 'coz the thought of food from restaurant, somehow makes me dizzy (I guess my brain's overflooded by the excess oil from the food I have been having for these 2 months)

I am still wondering where the restaurant's located thou.

Wesley - take us there after the coffee meeting?? or is it too far away???

Cheers,
Nancy

Awfully quiet day,

I have the following confirmed attendance so far. MeePokTar, aussiebc, MYCharcoal, Wenli+2 more, Oyster, CrazyOx, plus myself. haven't heard from singaporeano yet. So thats about 9 including myself. Any further changes?

Now the headache part, The address of the Malaya restaurant is at No.205 Luban road, Luwan district. Tel: 5301-5989. According to my driver, its at Luban Road/XieTu Road (Slanting Mud Rd) and Luban Rd/LiYuan Road(Beautiful Garden Rd). You guys think you can find your way there?

As I my the organiser of this grand event, I can use a little of my authority to use the company 12 seater passenger van. I can pick everybody up or those who do not know the place to the restaurant. Meet me at Ren Ming Guang Chang, where the changing of the metro line is. Please let me know if this is a better solution? If it is ok, I will sms you the vehicle number and place to meet. Kindly confirm.

I think my service is rather good right? Hee hee. What to do? All in the name of Makansutra!

P/s MeePoktar, you responsible of getting us to MaoMing!

I think I know where that place is and it's actually pretty near where aussieBC and I live, so we'll probably give the loti-van (bread-truck) a miss (let's do it together now..."AWWWWW!") and meet you all there.

But nice gesture Wesley! Maybe you could send me back home when I'm drunk!

Ohmmm...let's do the makansutra.

Post subject: Count me in your Makan Feast!

I just joined this Forum as I am also missing the homecook meals. Apparently the new Malaysian restaurant is very near the place I stay, juts 5 min walking distance, so count me in whenever you guys are planning for a feast in this restaurant!
FYI, I am from Penang, the hawker food haven, so I can tell whether or not, or how close the Msian food here compared with our Penang food, hei hei..... (but I'm not expecting too much though)
Also, I just cann't stop laughing the Aussie fella even brought his sambal balacan along....

Thanks, Wesley, excellent service indeed! If you are sure it is not too ma-fan for you, then we will take you up on your offer of transport from Ren Min Guang Chang.

Sorry - one of my friends backed out - so it is only me plus one other person.

Foggy day - I can not even see the buildings outside my window - zero visibility! Shocked

Wizzy, its not too late for you to join in, SiaoKia just joined it too and he just arrived back to Shanghai last night. Word of caution, try not to leave your mobile no. in the thread, PM me instead, safer for you.

So, who else beside Wenlee who needs to take the transport? Anybody stays/work in Pudong? I can pick them up on the way....

I will summarise all the attendance once more by 11am tomorrow.

It's vunderful! Are you sure a private room is enough? Sounds like the party's getting bigger (and started - down meepok, down...meepok's tingling already with the thought of Maoming Lu tomorrow! Nah, Maoming only because of cheap drinks!).

I just had curry puff and soon kueh at Crossroads on Nanjing Xi Lu for lunch. Washed it down with kopi-peng after that, and of course, my trusty Double-Happiness ciggy for dessert. High class ah? Not THAT fantastic but I was around that area unfortunately, and strangely, hungry too. Meepok doesn't have lunch normally, but given the excitement of the Malaya outing tomorrow evening, Meepok caved in and ate something for lunch!

Hopefully Malaya's better than Crossroads.

Whoever's ryan...who PMed me...we'll be waiting for you...muahahahahah!
