So, who else beside Wenlee who needs to take the transport? Anybody stays/work in Pudong? I can pick them up on the way....

I will summarise all the attendance once more by 11am tomorrow.

Wes

my question is going to divert from the original topic but i guess this is the nearest topic i can find that related to my question.

How is the life style there in shanghai from a Malaysian/Singaporean point of view.

My boss offer me a position in shanghai. I am a malysian working in Singapore. Is it hard to make frineds with your colleague if you dont speak mandarin? hows the social life there?

Dear all, sorry for the delayed.

Besides Wenlee, seems like nobody else is taking the Main Bao che. (passenger van)

I am going for lunch with supplier now and shall be back by 2pm. I need confirmation from the rest, who is taking the transport.

I have booked the VIP room for 10 person, I will be coming with 2 of my friends from Singapore tonight too. They just arrived on Wednesday.

So far I know Aussiebc with Mee Pok Tar, MyCharcoal and Oyster will be on their own... How about the rest?

The VIP room is booked at 6pm under my name. Wesley or ( Wei Shi Li).

Hope to see more mails when I am back at 2 pm.

Wes

ai yoh...seeing so many posting from fellow SIS-ters and MIS-ters (Msian-in-SH, this one my creation, since someone earlier mentioned cannot only say SIS-ters as there are northern neighbours browsing this forum)...makes me want to get to SH sooner.
i am only arriving there in apr (a newbie lah, am in the midst of working out my relocation logistics), can wait for me or not for your next outing?
by the way, just curious, do you guys (and/or gals) already know each other back home?

Guess everyone is still too drunk from last night's hangover and still snoozing loudly on their beds?

Vikac, you should join us for the next outing when you are here, none of us know each other and it was great fun we had last nite with the food and drinks...though I must admit the food did not taste like what you get at home, but alas, who cares, it is the gathering and the fun time we had together that is more important:

Wesley: thanks for the good job in organizing the outing, He is our indisputable leader and clown of the group. He is attached in Singapore but still available in Shanghai.

Wesley's 2 female friends: surprised to find that we came on the same flight from Singapore to Shanghai on 18 Feb. And we will be in Nanjing city this Sunday for 2 nights there and stay in the same Hilton hotel. One of them lives just oppsoite me in Simei....oh dear..talk about coincidences...!

Wenny & friend/hubby/colleauge/boss: nice and lovely couple who seems willing to offer you any help whenever you are in desperate situation. Malaysia boleh & Indonesia bisa.

Oyster: been here the longest in Shanghai and live very near my hometown in Selangor. She speaks very good Pu-tong-hua twisting her tongue just like the Beijing-nese.

Aussiebc: An Aussies dentist who looks more Chinese and Shanghainese than anyone of us, but could hardly speak a single Pu-tong-hua. If you want a free dental check-up, you know who to go to.

Wizzit: seems enjoying a good break from her BF in Penang. A goody-goody type of girl but wait till she gets to the pub. What an awesome sight to see her "blowing smoke" out of her mouth in the pub.

Mee-Pok-Tah: Who will ever imagine he is a SHE ?? Yes, she is a cute little girl with her Marlboro. Whenever I offer Marlboro to my Chinese friends, they always say it is too strong for them, here we have our little girl smoking Marlboro like nobody's business.

Singaporeano: a cool handsome looking young man. All of the single girls out there, what are you still waiting for?

Hope you guys/gals enjoy the brief write-up here in a humorous way. Thanks for the great time. Cheers !

Hahahaha it was totally cool meeting you guys last night!

And Meepoktah you asked for some evidence to back up my gender analysis research? hehehehe... there are TWO things in this paragraph alone that gave people the wrong idea... (1) the fact that you chainsmoke. (2) your comment about aussieBC..... there you go Twisted Evil

Oh, and Wes, if you're wondering where aussieBC went to, she's gone shopping at Pudong with her cousins this afternoon! Yup, we met up last night for dinner - rather she saw me eat/chainsmoke...awesome chick I tell you, she is!

Oh now I feel like someone's dug up my skeletons and hung them out to dry in the open...

But good fun on Friday, and Wes was obviously the towkay of towkays...much to learn from this 'uncle'!

Meepok says, talk more later. Going to pretend to work.

uh hmmm.... sorry. Just came back to work. *cough cough, clear throat.....kerrrrrrr Pui! Much better now*

Eh.... where is everybody...? Its a busy Monday for me... I like it.

So, I am glad that everybody enjoy the meeting up on Friday. Wenlee and Wiwan, Wizzy, Oyster, singaporeano, SiaoKia, Aussiebc and Mee Pok. (how you realised I always put meepok the last...let me exlain...) Seems like the food is not too much of the topic but rather the people. I am glad that everybody likes everybody. Thank you for all your compliments, I think this is a great group, we match each other very well... think we can get together again.

However, a few is missing, Mycarcoal? where are you, we waited for you, even the food waited for you, we have to cancel it...

Meepok I no towkay lah but daukay (bean sprout), because I am the organiser so I have to cover/take care of everybody as much as possible. Aussiebc, terrible English have to point my ears to listen to her Australian English. Her PuTongHwa? (face red/green/red...cannot tahan anymore... buah HA HA HA HA HA!). This two makes an interesting pair, you guys should see them dance together(yes we went 2 places more to drink and dance!) Tissue (wiping blood from the nose). AND Yes! MeePokTar ia a she! Though have not physically confirmed that but from my experience, yes she is a she! A nice surpise for me. Very clear cut character, definelty can live very well in the world on man..(KNN how dare she trick me!)

Ok, next session shall be house party / MJ session... however it will be the next thread! Who is interested?

In the spirit of food reviewing (which this thread is dedicated to doing, no?), I would say that the outing to Malaya last Friday night was a stupendous gastronomical indulgence!

Food: 3.5/5 - would have given a 4 if not for the small portion.
My vote goes to the Assam Laksa, done to perfection: the ideal amount of viscosity in the gravy, just enough "assam" and "pedas", and yes, the beehoon wasn't soggy! Interesting curry crab though - fragrant gravy (too little!) but shells too shattered; crunched through a few tiny pieces amidst my rice and well, it's all good anyway.

Ambience: 4/5
Reminds me of ole colonial times with the sparkling white walls and columns, juxtaposed with the dark flooring and furniture. Very Raffles Hotel! Now if only the waiters wore sarongs...Oh c'mon, it's MALAYA what.

Maybe it was Wes's connections but 50RMB for that spread is a steal! And all the freebies! I don't think I would be going back there without Wes - sure will pok kai one.

So aussieBC and I were thinking of doing the whole KTV thang soon. According to Wes, the ones here in Shanghai are more sanitised than the ones back in Singapore (sure or not!)...so we're counting on you for a good night out once again!

And yes, sorry Wes but I brought aussieBC to Maoming Lu AFTER Mural that night...THERE was where the real drama started! She looks really cute with her half dreamy eyes, drawling over whiskey cokes. We had escorts picked up from Mural before (did we mention that they were underaged?), so no worries. But I would say that our escorts were really enjoying all the gyrating going on the dancefloor...BUT that's another story...

Thanks singaporeano for that brief analysis but I still don't see how those lines quoted were male-specific. Does that mean that only guys are allowed to appreciate female aesthetics? And Billie Holiday, Virginia Woolf probably smoked their lives away (ok ok, it really was drugs and depression but you get my drift!) and I don't see an ounce of femininity missing from them...

Anyway, I'm not having an identity crisis...yet. Wink

But in all, good to see you people in the flesh! Oh yes, singaporeano is one handsome...AHBENG! Kidding lah.

So KTV? Another thread eh?

Aussiebc...MJ session is definitely not watching a Michael Jackson concert....kekeke...you first have to learn the terms chee mo (self touch - direct translation from hokkien) to 5 fans, and that is why you got lots of $$$$ ..it is a Mahjong session....karaoke sounds good to me, can't wait to sing my long time one and only song that I know...."My Way""....and yes...I did it my way....

Just back from Nanjing....met Lucy and Kathleen while having breakfast in the hotel....

grrrr...back to work now and replying all my emails at 10pm..(yawn..yawn..yawn..)..cheers..

Up where?! Rolling Eyes And a little ambiguity won't hurt anyone, I guess. Whether or not I chew carpet, only a few people know and will know...But I do love looking at men too!

Anyway, that's besides the point lah!

Karaoke?! As you can see, the shower-crooners, closet Singaporean/Malaysian/Chinese Idol are coming out! SiaoKia can do it "his way", and I guess I could pay a tribute to Shanghai (and Chow Yun Fatt) by doing a Frances Yip..."long ban...long lau..."

And did anyone check out the Laguna Sari lunch that cob4lt was talking about?

Hi,
I'm singaporean too! I LOVE xiao long bao in Din Tai Fung *drooling*. Anyway, I'm going to shanghai for holiday soon, wondering any place/restaurant has delicious xiao long bao or dian xin. I will love to eat chinese food, I'm really really extremely sick of western food(bo bian, hubby relocated in US).

BTW, can I bargain prices when I shop in shanghai Question (u know, those pasa malang-sorry, my malay not good?) How much % lower than the orginal price? My friend said 30% of their price quote.

Do you guys has anything like Singapore club over there? In CA, we have 1 but very small group, I think less than 200ppl and I hardly know them because most of them are married, late 30s with kids & speak American English most of the time. sign... I'm really getting homesick now... the kind of homesick meepoktah talking about... coz' very sian here. Luckily for you guys can still meet-up and talk, but I hardly have anyone to speak singlish to. Crying or Very sad
Any expat-wife can share their views on how they spend they daily day in shanghai (beside taking care of kids).

Slash 'em prices at the "fake market" by at least 60%, then slowly negotiate up to 50%, MAX 40% of quoted price.

But that's what my mother tells me lah.

And as for xiaolongbao, some say that the Nan Xiang restaurant at Yuyuan/Chenghuang temple is very good (well, I've seen snaking queues just to get in), but really, most small corner shops (strongly recommend that little shop along Maoming Nan Lu, off Huaihai Lu - only because the waitress there smiled at me and my mum. hardly get that in Shanghai...) with its not so 'glam' decor, serve up pretty decent (AND CHEAP!) nanxiang xiaolongbaos.

Hey, s.i.n.g.a.p.o.r.e.a.n.o, if there's a Malaysian "association" here like you mentioned, I'm sure you'd know of a Singapura clan, no?

Maybe could check out links at the Singaporean consulate here in Shanghai - I'm sure the Singaporean "club" and other Singaporean-interests groups, would have registered with it (if not, kenna charged with unlawful assembly maybe!)...

But seriously, *taps fingers impatiently*...*looks around neurotically*...*wipes sweat from brow*...
