Why can't Chinese people drive properly? It doesn't matter where in the world, from Singapore to Sydney to San Francisco to Shanghai.

It's the Law.. If you are Chinese you must be a bad driver....Chinese and Nuns....Both drive like meeting God is their objective..

Don't know about mainland chinese so much because I mostly took the metro but seemed like even when I took a taxi, they drove fine. I've been to Busan, Korea and they have very narrow lanes and a ton of traffic. The buses are literally 2 feet away from each other on the sides. Those drivers are extremely steady, focused, and calm. I've never seen drivers that good.

I do hope that someone will explain this:
Anyways I have a really nice Chinese roommate. Actually she's amazing and FUNNY
But we had a little problem: I'm a clean freak she's... let's say the opposite.
I wrote some "how to clean" guides for her but still no improvement.
So one day I said: I can't understand how a WOMAN can have such high tolerance for dirt! How can you be so oblivous to dirt??

She said: I'M NOT A WOMAN; I'M ONLY HALF A WOMAN!!

Whe hat does that mean? btw she's better now!

it means she is a lesbian. you can just ask her "are you a lala" where "lala" means lesbian in Chinese.

now for the hygiene issue, check out her background (education/financial status) and you will see the answer.

However, actually I can answer the reason without going into details. You said she is your roommate and this means she is on rent together with you, oh you can just safely assumed her family is not in shanghai and she just moved to Shanghai for work/study. This is the reason - you drive just 100km out of Shanghai and the average income there could be just 1/3 of what you get in Shanghai (which is already damn low).

Thanks !!! Ta bu shi lala
You are right; she is not from Shanghai however she's travelled and studied abroard. The other problem is if I don't tell her to do something, she won't do it...It's like living with a 5 year old. We have a great relationship beside that. We talk a lot about germs so it's probably education...
I'm aware of the situation outside of Shanghai; I spent a year travelling around China before settling in Shanghai.

But you still don't really accept how deep those habits go. You think you can "talk to her about germs" and suddenly she'll become a clean freak.

Here. For a comparable situation, take a Nebraska fundamentalist and explain to him/her why God is a silly creation of man's insecurity. See how drastically that changes their behavior patterns because you explained the facts to them.

People are not very rational, ya know ?

Yea, I see what you mean. I don't expect her to change. I guess I was just puzzled ( Sorry, I've never had a roommate before) I couldn't understand how someone her age, 26, didn't know that you have to use soap to clean dishes ( she does now) or she didn't know you have to keep the freazer's door closed, leaving used pads for all to see... I know this is normal here, but she LIVED abroad before. That's changed everything.
She told me she never learnt to clean because she went to boarding school.
Yep Rationality is like a precious stone wink:
She's a great roommate tho!

It does not change everything. Just because your flatmate lived abroad, does not mean that will (or should) change the way she is. You live here, and yet you still have your own set of standards and habits. Just because you are living in China, does that mean you are going to change to suit your flatmate? You will learn from her and she will learn from you. Enjoy the experience.

Come on already... what's the answer to this one??

boredengineer wrote:
why do a lot of chinese guys roll up one pant leg, most often noticed when they are eating?

A few new question:

1; Why is it many Chinese people cover their mouth when using a toothpick after eating Question

2; Why is it completely impossible for any Chinese to give/receive (understand) directions to a location Question

3; Why is it that many Chinese hold 2-3 fingers in front of their nose when crossing a crowded street Question

4; Why is it that most Chinese are scared sh*tless of both the sun and rain Question

5; Why is it that in most wedding parties (At least the 20-25 I have attended through work) there is a minimum of 250 people joining Question Who knows that many people well enough to actually invite them to join your wedding?

6; Why is it that the "Police" always have the blue lights on Question (In Shenzhen they have both the lights and the siren on constantly, I noticed in Shanghai they tend only to have the lights on)

EDIT: I should add I am not trying to insult anyone. I am only trying to understand a little more, and see if there is in fact some sense to it all.

5. Wedding Parties - At our wedding (me American, him a 1st generation HK Chinese in a heavily HK chinese area near Toronto) I learned that when you invite someone, you are inviting the entire family.

Its not like in Western(or american?) weddings where you very carefully detail out in the invitation who you are inviting (Mr. and Mrs... Ms. and Guest .... etc..).
We would invite a couple, and in the RSVP I would get "No. of people attending = 4 or 5!", and they would bring their mother-in-law, cousin, whoever happened to be in town!

We were lucky that people were giving us a count of these extra people so that we could plan for the seating! The good news is that everyone gives cash so there was not a big burden to pay for all that, and it was fun to have such a HUGE party (we had at least 250).

1. That's just one of those politeness things that's different. Showing your teeth while picking them is considered gross--and it makes sense, especially if the gums are pretty bloody...that can ruin the aftertaste of a good meal all right.
2. I don't know, but my theory is that most people living in cities now grew up in the countryside. Navigating in cities is a difficult skill to learn (I know, as I've had to learn it).
4. When you have to wash your clothes by hand, dirty rain in SH is pretty scary; it's also supposedly bad for your Qi, to say nothing of what it feels like to be cold and wet and come back to an apartment with horrible/no heating. When light skin is correlated with success, sunlight can be scary too, as it was in Europe and the U.S. until recently.
5. To share the good luck, and leave no family member out. Also that way nobody loses face by being uninvited. It's common for folks to make a small profit off a wedding. By the by, the size of a wedding is counted by how many tables of people you had, 1 table = 10 guests.
6. Wasn't there a law passed a few years ago here banning the use of police sirens except in special circumstances? I vaguely remember something about that...

I think I figured this one out. If you didn't brush your teeth very often and you ate stuff called "stinky tofu," your saliva would taste like ****. Would you rather spit or swallow that?

No wonder they spit all the time. =P

Have you ever been to Italy?

Chinese are just trying to copy it.

Why do Chinese feel the urge to call/talk/whistle/clap whatever at other people's dog's?

Back in Shenzhen I couldn't walk 2 minutes without someone giggling "Hello" at me. Here in Shanghai I can walk for 5 minutes before that happens, but can't even cross the first road before someone already starts calling my dog...

Why do Chinese make the peace / victory sign with their hands when they get their photo taken?

One more thing to file away under WTFITAA
