Sadly, not many. I have my students but only one understands enough English to be able to answer these questions and my sense is that she's lived a pretty atypical life. Most of my friends are other expats (though almost no Americans for some reason). I've puzzled over why this is. I think it's because I work from my home, my children attend a school mostly populated by Taiwanese (oops, they're Chinese, right?), we unintentionally ended up living in a Japanese neighborhood, and the type of Chinese women I would likely find common ground with are probably at work.

I suppose that's true and sexy changes from generation to generation. The new sex symbols - those very skinny young boys who look like members of a struggling garage band don't do it for me but I guess they must rock somebody's boat. I've always had a (theoretical) thing for carpenters - they're usually in good shape, are smarter than a construction worker, and usually a bit rebellious which is why they work for themselves.
Thanks for your answers. |

Well, a big beefy carpenter is the "Holmes" in the title.
It's actually not a bad show. He goes around and fixes peoples houses who hired a bad contractor who either screwed up the job horrible, or just didn't finish, etc. and then disappeared.
Always fun to listen to him rail about bad contractors. And he's usually only wearing khaki overalls and a tank top. |

Why cant Chinese people do this? While sitting at your desk, move your right foot in a clock wise circle. Now draw the number 6 in the air with your finger on right hand. Their foot always changes direction. |

| Post subject: Re: Questions for Chinese on the forum |
1) At what age does a Chinese child learn the word and concept for foreigner? When they say weiguoren do they actually mean foreigner or do they mean white person?
A person from another country is referred to as weiguoren. Although, a white person stands out more than say a Japanese or Korean person, hence the term foreigner is more often associated with white people or people who are easily distinguishable from the Chinese.
Not sure about the age of Chinese children learning the word and concept, as I was in Shanghai at a time when there were very few foreigners around.
2) Do Chinese and the Chinese language differentiate between "interesting" and "well-educated"? Can a person be one without being the other?
My grandma didn't receive an education at all and she told some of the most interesting tales based on her life's experience.
3) Is no longer wearing long underwear dependent on reaching a certain date or a certain temperature?
I think Chinese like to conform, so perhaps more by what people on the streets are wearing than anything else. However, it would make sense to base it on temperature!
4) What is the iconic image of male sexiness? Would firemen or carpenters be considered sexy or does doing physical labor make them less desirable?
My parents' generation never talked about sexiness. I don't even think the word passion came into the equation. It was about finding someone to share a stable future with and once you were married, you stay married. I know my parents love each other, although the concept of love is completely different from what I would regard as love.
It is a completely different story with the Gen Xs and Ys. I certainly want to feel passionate about the person I date and eventually marry.
5)What's the purpose of walking backwards?
No idea, other than it is supposed to be really good for your health! |

When I was 4 or 5, once my mom took me to the No.1 Department Store. We stopped at a counter that sold kids' shoes. I wanted a pair of red leather shoes which's not in my mom's budget. "

1) At what age does a Chinese child learn the word and concept for foreigner? When they say weiguoren do they actually mean foreigner or do they mean white person?
When the first time I realized there are some people look different, my mom taught me "'Dont point at them, they are wai guo ren." Then I got this idea in my tiny little brain that people whose hair color and skin color are different from ours are wai guo ren(I coulnt identify Japanese or Korean from Chinese when I was 2).
2) Do Chinese and the Chinese language differentiate between "interesting" and "well-educated"? Can a person be one without being the other?
Yes, Interesting is 有趣的, well-educated is 受过良好教育的
Yes, of course. they are not mutual alternative. But education also kill your brain. Half of my brain died in college.
3) Is no longer wearing long underwear dependent on reaching a certain date or a certain temperature?
I dont know, I have never seen a girl wearing a long underwear...it will be taken off anyways.
4) What is the iconic image of male sexiness? Would firemen or carpenters be considered sexy or does doing physical labor make them less desirable?
I am an accountant....I will never get laid..wahwahwah
5) What's the purpose of walking backwards?
1.exercise, study says its good for your neck and back.
2.racing, I thought in this way, I could beat the guy who runs faster than me.
3.go back to check what you saw and you dont wanna bother to turn around.
4.shhh, dont call them retarded. Be kind to them. |

1. because it's rarely sunny?
2. it's a 'tilda', used sometimes to represent 'around'... e.g. a taxi from X to Y should cost ~15rmb
3. why not? |

1. Why do hardly any Chinese wear sunglasses?
Not really, I have three paris and I can see chinese wearing sunglasses in summer anywhere. If you have to find a reason, i think it is becuz blue eyes are more sensitive to sunshine than brown eyes.I m told so.
2. What is the point of these ~~~~~~~~
It just means some kind of continuing sound, like those hs(or other letters) in ahhhhhhh, or yeahhhhhhh.but of course there is not such a way for chinese characters, so in chinese its 啊~~~~~~~,which means ahhhhhhhhh or 不~~~~~, means nooooooooooo
3. I can't remember my third question!
Its ok,I totally understand, I cant even remember my name in monday mornings becuz of my hangover. |

Chinese don't need sunglasses since slanteyes don't let in much light anyways, duh.
BTW I am chinese and back home in Canada I'd almost always need to wear my sunglasses. But here, even in the last couple weeks, "sunny" isn't really that sunny, and it doesn't seem necessary to bring out the glasses. Also maybe i'm being affected since I don't see many others wearing them. |
