sbergman, when you say 'in the west' do you mean 'in the United States'? I've never heard of your white shoe thingy and have no idea what labor day is. |

Yeah its a US thing, and I'm guessing really old fashioned. I've only heard references of "wearing white after labor day" on bad TV shows. |

Thanks. I was trying to make a point about sbergman's point number 1:

She hinted that Chinese people may like to lump all foreigners together and then went on to lump all foreigners together. |

I'm guessing by 'west' you mean 'United States'.

Yes, I realized my Labor Day slip after I made it - and it's actually Memorial Day, not Labor Day.
I was not, however, hinting that Chinese people lump all foreigners together. Actually, just the opposite. I was wondering whether weiguoren was also used when pointing at Japanese or Koreans on the street. |

no, no one would say dong fang ren when referring Japanese or Koreans. Usually we just say ri4 ben3 ren2 or han2 guo2 ren2, and also wai4 guo2 ren2 sometimes. |

well, if you really want to put it this way, I have to say yes, you can, it all depends on the context. Dong fang ren means eastern people , which contains people in several counties, inculding Chinese. You can use dong fang ren when you are talking about eastern people and western people, but it is confusing and awkward when you try to specify people's citizenship. |

not for chinese, how can you use a phrase that includs yourself to identify people from yourselves. Sbergman was asking what a chinese would say. Will an american, in the states, use "western people" to refer to a bunch of caucasion look people on the other side of the street?I dont think so |

I m afraid there are not Chinese traditional gifts for retirement, although some retiring people will give colleagues candies or sth...
there ARE Chinese(Shanghainese, cuz traditions are different in different cities) traditional gifts for housewarming; some specific sweet cakes and buns are usually used to express the wish for sweetness and prosperity in this scenario. (couldnt find the pic)
But it will be funny for a foreiger to give the person that, what do you think? |
