Post subject: Recent dog moves?

Hi Everyone..
My husband and I will likely be moving to Shanghai in the next couple of months and bringing my four legged baby.. a 9 year old Terrier mix. I live in Chicago, which is a HUGE dog city, so I know I have WAY over babied him and I have concerns about getting him to Shanghai.

Searching through recent posts I did find pet relocation services such as World Care Pet, Globy, and AGS Fourwinds.
Both World Care pet and Globy's web pages wouldn't open.. and I saw AGS Fourwinds didn't appear to be a specific pet relocation and didn't have a regional office for us.

Does anyone have any recent experiences they can offer both with Pet relocation services and the new quarantine facility? I'll admit getting my dog to Shanghai is a big part of my decision to move there or not, so I'm looking for some piece of mind if there is any out there!

Thank you so much for any advice! Shocked

You can probably try Jia Liang. They helped my friend to relocate their dogs to the UK from Shanghai. I talked to one of their staff and they seem to be very helpful. And I notice there are infomation about importing pets on their website.

Hi,
I brought my dog over in late February 2008. It was stressful and I was feeling guilty over not securing a broker to help with Peanut's move (20 lbs/9kg Schnauzer/daschund mix coming as luggage on Air Canada) but the cheapest broker for pets I had found was 3000RMB and on top of vet, her airfare, my airfare, etc. I felt it was too much... but I was still anxious - I was landing on a Sunday and had been told that unless I had a broker she would not be brought to the quarantine facility - she would be left overnight at customs...

I had been to China before so I knew to take much of what I heard with a grain of salt and knew that even though most things are "too difficult to do" if you insist, rephrase your request or lightly grease the wheels most things are possible.

I couldn't have been more worried over nothing! When we landed in Shanghai, I saw her crate come out of the luggage compartment through the window of my seat. I saw her move around, I knew she was ok. I deplaned, I went to the luggage carrousel where I started to pick out my luggage - in addition to my carry-on suitcase and huge purse I had 2 big, heavy full suitcase... and the dog... who showed up on the carousel with the rest of the luggage, other than being stressed out, not worse for the wear.

As I was trying to figure out how to maneuver 3 suitcases and a large crate being alone and not able to push 2 trolleys at once, someone in a lab coat came over to me. He was one of the guys from customs. Very proactive and helpful! He grabbed one of my suitcases and helped me get my stuff to the customs office. There I filled in the paperwork, was assured that the dog would be brought over immediately to the quarantine office... they gave me a strange look when I asked if she was going to stay overnight... like I had asked the dumbest question Wink what would they want with a dog overnight when there is a perfectly good quarantine facility nearby. I paid all the quarantine fees, nothing extra, everything exactly as stated. I had no home address yet, I was going to take the week that she was quarantined to apartment hunt, and I gave them a friend's cell phone number since her Chinese was better than mine and I didn't have a local number yet.

The whole experience at customs was relaxed and easy, I was allowed to take the dog out of the crate and say bye to her. The only documents I needed were a rabies certificate and a certificate of good health from my governement (in my case Canada - had a check up at our regular vet's and then went to the gvmt building downtown and for 20$ they stamped it, that's it, that's all).

The next Sunday they called my friend and said that for 300RMB they could come drop her off where I lived (XJH, Puxi)... and seeing how that is less than the cost of a roundtrip taxi I jumped at the occasion. They dropped her off, had me sign a release, paid the 300RMB, was told that if she fell sick I had to notify them and that was it. That was over 2 months ago and nothing bad to report except for the fact that she now absolutely HATES her crate... which is quite understandeable.

I'm also doing a pet relocation homework for my cousin who lives in LA. She's thinking of bringing her 3 dogs with her this August/September to Shanghai. How glad I am to have found this thread!

Let me know if I can be any help. I started this post awhile ago.. we're here now and the doggie is fine. I still have to finish my registration once our other paperwork comes in. But it has so far turned out to be relatively easy. And I was very worried initially.
