| Post subject: Bringing fragile things to China |
I was wondering how I can manage to bring a big porcelain vase back to China. i believe it's 6 kg's but it's quite big and won't fit into a regular samsonite luggage carrier, and i cant possible put it in the luggage for check in - that's out of question.
the vase is of course very fragile, so I'm really confused on what I should do?
maybe airlines have a special counter for those items? and maybe it's even possible to put an insurance on the vase as it's worth quite a lot. anyhow i have to manage to bring it back to china in a WHOLE PIECE
tips and help would be much appreciated |

Contact the airline you are going to use as baggage policies are changing very fast these days. You should be able to go online to the airline you plan to be using and look under checked luggage. It will give you the maximum specifications for length, width and height (or sum of those) of a box you can check in lieu of 1 piece of luggage. Weight won't be a problem as 6kg is virtually no weight at all. My porcelain/ceramic often weighs 30kg for each piece.
If you really can't check this piece, then you are in for the only other option which is the option musicians use that are not able/willing to check their instruments. The airline requires you to purchase an extra seat on board the airplane for your package in that case and you carry it on board and place in seat next to you. There are restrictions on this as well so you had better check with the airlines. Some airlines have additional accomodations, usually for a price, for oversized items such as skis, bicycles, etc. as well but those are always in checked section as well.
I baggage check porcelain sinks, pedestals, etc, regularly between the US and China and the only problem I have is that the porcelain drives the x-ray machines at TSA nuts so they always fully hand inspect every piece of luggage that contains porcelain/ceramic. I am apt to find several Tsa tags in each bag as the bags are hand inspected at different points along the route. The delays this extra inspection takes usually means the bags are delayed and then delivered to me the next day after I arrive.
One other option of course is to ship insured by UPS/DHL, etc. and the cost may be less than the extra seat on airline depending if this piece is going one way or round trip. |
