| Post subject: water in supermarket meat |
Yesterday I got a beef tenderloin from Freshmart. This afternoon when I took it out for cooking, the beef tenderloin was immersed in A LOT OF liquid (about 200ml) inside the original package.
Of course there wasn't any liquid when I bought it, but 12 hours later, about 200ml of liquid oozed out. Very disappointing. I know in China, it's not unusual to pump up meat with water, but doesn't it cross the line when you bought a beef tenderloin and about 200ml of liquid oozed out later?
How much water has been pumped in that piece of beef tenderloin to have that much of bloody liquid oozed out? Do we buy the water or the meat? |

Tenderloin with water -- $19.99
Tenderloin without water -- $10.99
Experience you bought -- Priceless. |

Old news - happens everywhere.
Raw meat injected with water and additives to retain moisture is being sold alongside ordinary fresh meat by leading UK supermarkets, a disclosure that represents yet another blow to the reputation of food production writes Anthony Fletcher.

Yes, I know it's not something new. But usually the amount of water pumped into the meat is enough for the meat to hold up (not a lot of liquid sitting around the meat in the origibal oackage but when you marinate the meat, the meat will not absorb the marinating sauce.)
One thing is I was shocked that SO MUCH water oozed out from that piece of beef tenderloin I bought. The second thing is I expect meat quality of Freshmart to be better - now, I know I was wrong. |

I'm curious if you 'squeezed' the meat (basically rung it out at the shop) then had them re-weigh it if they would act surprised?
You could always ask to see the meat (to inspect it of course) before it's wrapped, or unwrap what is already packaged (because they can easily re-wrap it) and wah-lah, sit it on a flat surface (on the styrofoam base) and use a piece of cling wrap they package it in and 'press' it as hard as you can - liquids in the quantities you're talking about should shoot out from the center and pour on the floor.
Now that would be Priceless. |

Do you mean (dead) shrimps here are pumped up with water too? (I've only bought live shrimps so far, so don't know what's wrong with the dead shrimps on ice.) |
