Post subject: Yet another spin on the visa situation

I have read through the forum and have not found an answer for this specific question. Hope someone can help. I'm quitting my job. I know my work permit will be cancelled. I know there is a chance the residence permit will be cancelled as well.
First question, can my employer legally make me pay for the visa process? If I quit and go travelling outisde of China, can I come back with my residence permit? If they cancel my residence permit without me knowing while I am out of the country, will I be able to get back in? Will I be able to get a tourist visa abroad if my residence permit still appears to be valid? If my passport shows a tourist visa, a f visa, and a z visa with residence permit all in the past year, will I have trouble getting a toruist visa? Even if it is valid can I switch to a tourist visa? What is the penalty if my residence permit is cancelled and I remain in China for a period of time. So a lot of questions. Any and all help is appreciated.

Any chance you can get your new employer's HR department to handle all these things for you? If you choose to stay unemployed, chances are you will have to deal with all of these visa and permit issues personally (as in: no one else will do it for you).

Edit: and you should consider just calling up your consulate and asking them, they probably have the answers to just about any question you have related to this subject and your specific situation.

As long as you have no documentation that they promised to pay for the visa and related expenses, they probably can legally take the costs directly out of what they owe you. Besides, don't you feel like a dumb f*** expecting them to pay for your work visa when you no longer work for them?

If they cancel your residence permit they will likely refuse you entry into China. If they cancel it while you are in China, they probably won't let you leave and instead make you pay a fine (possible jail time) before they allow you to leave.

They probably will not let you change your residence permit to a tourist visa in China, but you should have no problem getting one outside of China. When you apply for a new visa they will cancel the old one if it is still valid.
