| Just had a call from my mate who lives in SZ. He went back to SZ via Huaguang border last night at about 11pm and it was FUBAR. A lot of foreign visitors (many looking like the people that head to the shows at this time of year) had been let out of the Hong Kong side but could not enter the Chinese side because the visa on arrival has now stopped leading to much wailing and gnashing of teeth. He get through OK after a long wait due to the length of the cues so he didn't find out what happened to the people who got rejected. |

Hmmmm... my parents have just had their visa application questioned. They are coming to Shanghai for about a week on their way to France and my father listed his reason for coming to China as 'visiting relatives' i.e. me. I'm only here on a tourist visa myself (and no I'm not working) and they have requested my birth certificate to prove they're my parents. Should I just book them into a hotel for the night they arrive and get them to change their reason for travel to 'tourism'? They've also requested a copy of their plane tickets proving they're leaving Shanghai. I'm feeling a little uneasy as they have both traveled to Shanghai before with no problems so I don't understand the sudden attention!
Just to react to this. Perhaps some of us get a tiny taste of what Chinese traveller get when apply fot visa to the Free World.
Funny to see in those visa thread how people complain about the bad chinese government etc. over such insignificant issues. Knowing that most of us come from countries that sponsor separatism in China (and other nations), kill people all over the world etc. Lets be serious. Those visa issues are just minor annoyance.

I'm not sure if I've offended you Cambronne however I was only seeking advice for my family's current predicament. I was making no comment on the Chinese government or its people. |

My God you are a douchebag. People in this thread are merely relating to their own problems and trying to find answers. Are you having Visa issues right now? Probably not from the tone of your reply. I bet your tune would change if you were trying to make a living, was established in a foreign country, and suddenly had to rethink everything.
Don't be such an *******. |

^Question: did the regulations for the Family L-Visa change as well?
I plan on getting married soon, and would then apply for it myself.
Would be a pain in the @ss to be only able to stay 30 days a time on it.
plz halp |
No, it did not change. You can still obtain a one-year multiple entry L visa, but they are following the guidelines more strictly. |

But in the case of the one-year multiple entry L, every year you would have to return to your home country, is that correct? |

Not correct. It can be renewed continually. |

oOoOo...
I'm going to be getting myself one of those when I come back next time!
How do you go about getting that, though? I talked to Japan Visa a few months back and they told me that whether I was married to a Chinese girl or not, I can't get a better L visa than 6m multiple or 3m single/double/mult. |

Go out of the country and apply for a new visa, or just go out of the country and come back in? |

You never have to leave the country -- never.
It isn't a visa you apply for from outside of China. Once in China on whatever visa you have, you go to the PSB with the necessary documentation and ask for it. |

Cool. And it's multi-entry? Can I get that before I go back to Canada so that when I'm coming back (in less than a year) I'll be able to come back on that one? |

Yes, multi-entry. I suppose you could get it before you leave, but why waste the money? You can get a fresh one when you return. |

I don't want to go through the trouble of applying for the initial L visa from Canada. It's not as cheap to apply for a visa in Canada anyway. I'd rather just have one before I left. It'd still last a good three months after I return anyway.
So, I can apply at the local PSB station, or do I need to go to the Entry Exit Bureau in Pudong? |

Local PSB stations can never issue visas. Only Entry & Exit can issue or extend visas. |

Ah, that's what I thought. I read PSB above and just wanted to confirm that.
Well, that's it for questions. It's on my to do list now. |

From memory you have to have:
- Marriage certificate
- Wifes Hukou
- Passport sized pictures (2 I think).
You fill in the form, apply and 2 weeks letter you get your visa. On the form you say whether its mult-entry or not since its a bit more expensive. |

I see you are American. Anyway this is not what is happening here. The problems happen for people who entered China with the wrong visa (e.g. tourist visa to look for a job). They know have to fly back home to apply for a proper visa. If they have a legit job, getting that visa is no problem. Those L visa matters, as explained above, are not so complicated, you dont need to leave the country. Being in a foreign country, working without working visa, etc... is certainly distressing. I do sympathise with those people posting here, though I admit I have no visa problem myself (I dont have a visa!). It may be useful however to understand the backround to this - years of laxism by the Chinese authorities, that comes to an end due to foreign governments meddling. |

Got the following e-mail from Amcham today:
| Quote: |
Dear AmCham Member:
China Visa Issue
The Chamber is aware of and has been monitoring developments concerning the issuance of visas to China, especially multiple entry business visas. We know that any change in policies and procedures for issuing visas has the potential to impact you and your businesses.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry in the Hong Kong SAR website has now posted the following advice:
“Visa applicants are increasing in a large number and need longer waiting time in the visa office recently. If you don't reside or work in Hong Kong permanently, you are required to apply Chinese visa from the Embassy or Consulate-General of Peoples' Republic of China in your resident country. You are welcome to come to China for tourism, business, or visit for the Olympic Games.”
http://www.fmcoprc.gov.hk/eng/zgqz/bgfwxx/default.htm
We will endeavor to keep members updated when we receive information, but recommend that you also monitor the situation as entry-exit conditions for China do change from time to time. We would advise travelers to contact their local Chinese Embassy or Consulate General for the most current information.
Warm regards,
Brenda Lei Foster
President

Yes all these xpats starting to understand what it feels like to be an illegal Mexican worker in the USA.
I don't have any problems with visa's either. Bein considered a PRC citizen from that little renegade island across the straits certainly helps things along. |

Not for Americans now. It's a flat rate of $130. |
