@ Michael - I picked one up at Xietu Lu that day.
Everything went perfectly fine.
This camera is one of the very limited industrial products that you see, feel buy and know that you have purchased something special, that will last longer than the other ones you had before.
I am very sadisfied and learning the camera now.
@leidelaohu - the trailor factor was one of the reasons for me to buy my last camera in 2007 - a Samsung NV7 - compact with fixed optical zoom.
The last trip I had the Samsung with me, I had the urge of having something more handy (big hands with tiny NV7 - no good), something quicker (startup, focus, f stops, high iso), something much more quality (SLR) with some degree of variability (SLR).
It is quite a huge jump in quality and technical possibilities.
The D300 is a huge brick indeed and very heavy for the first time (so a second very small pocked cam is due to purchase).
I am still looking for a very compact bag for wearing the camera on my belt and have it handy quickly (LowePro 160 for 250 RMB atm is to big and not sturdy enough).
I start now shopping for the needed small things (2nd battery, neutral strap, CF cards,...)
For the shopping I prepared myself an excel - any interest of sharing this here (when allowed)? |

apologies if this question is redundant since I may have scanned over it while reading this thread...
Can you find an English oweners manual for the Nikon D-40x at the Xietu/Luban market? Best Buy didn't offer one, and I need it since the camera is a gift for a friend who has never used a DSLR before. Sure, I know it's online, but isn't a bit burdensome to go online anytime you have a question...and I'm a bit lazy to print the whole thing. |

i couldnt find an english manual for the d80 (my camera guy didnt have any and you have to have a serial number from a us purchased nikon to register and d/l one from the website)
after a little searching i found it in pdf, put it on a key and went to the printer. 35rmb for a nicely covered and bound complete manual.
i found 'capture nx' on demonoid though the girl ended up not using it needing it/using it. |

Follow my link to the Nikon site and you should be helped.
OFF:
Has the D80 the same "?" help button as the D300?
You get an short explanation of each function you can set up - it is extraordinary user friendly - big thumbs up for the designers at Nikon.
This function saves me from searching in the manual for so many times - keeps reading short, works perfect. |

I own the 24mm and 90mm Canon shift lenses and they get the most use of any of the lenses I own. Not quite the range of control that I used to have when shooting with a 5"x4" camera but still very handy. |

Hey everyone, thanks for the advice. I'm glad I stumbled on this thread before making my purchase.
Got my camera, grip, and bag at the photography mall on Xietu Lu and Luban Lu. Prices are okay, and the people there seem to be much nicer to deal with than the aggressive Xu Jia Hui madhouse. |

I know you already bought the camera, just want to add my 0.02$
I bought my D60 DX-EX kit in Best Buy for 4600 rmb, and I trust these people more than the people in meiluocheng. It's indeed kinda like the xiangyang market out there, especially if you're foreign (even if you speak chinese).
Best Buy is expensive, but at least you can trust the salespeople. Downside is that they often don't know what they're talking about, especially when you have technical/special/professional questions.
Going to buy a 10-20mm Sigma wide-angle lens in lubanlu tomorrow, they seem to have the best prices.
I like the small size of the nikon d60 versus the d80, although it misses the lens-motor of the d80, which means some 3rd party lenses dont have auto-focus.
Buy the body with warranty at Best Buy, buy lenses at lubanlu |

Hi, am new here in Shanghai and would like to take up photography. Would anyone know of any good places in Shanghai to learn? I would like to pick this skill while in Shanghai instead of just snapping away with my digital compact camera.
Also, are these the recommended places to shop for dslr? (Xietu/Luban market/Best Buy) Do we have to bargain on the prices or are these prices fixed?
Thanks! |

You can just learn the basic first by yourself. Then you have to practise frequently... Have fun! I am beginner too |

I don't like best buy as a matter of principal. For the photography market at xie tu lu you can knock a little off the price, but don't expect too much! |

The photo-mall at Luban Lu & Xietu Lu (exact address mentioned earlier in the thread) has some shops at the 3rd or 4th floor that sell and probably buy 2nd hand equipment.
Would you mind posting your kit here, or in the classifieds section? Some forum members might be interested in buying from you. I might be interested in something for my 40D as well. |

They absolutely do buy second hand equipment. You better have a price in mind before you go there, however! There are also dealers on the 6th floor, however, they mostly buy older stuff. |

Good advice Menos, i bought a Nikon D200 and SB 800 flash from Lu Ban Lu both with Chinese manuals, bought also 17mm - 50mmTamron lens, english manual and 70mm - 300mm Nikon VR lens with English manual. So desperately needed english manuals for the major hardware. The advice the Nikon shop gave me was to contact Nikon in Shanghai but they only stock chinese ones. I was in Singapore last week and also tried Nikon service there but no joy.
I jsut upgraded from D70s which was fairly easy to use i bought the D200 as the price was pretty good due to the D300 suberseeding it. |

Late inquiry...
Can the experts please give the advantages of a Canon 450(Rebel) over the Canon 40D.
I want to buy my first DSLR and am leaning towards a 40D. Will a newbie like me be better off with the cheaper Rebel or the semi-pro?
Thanks... |
