In your term, I suppose your perspective into the relationship or love affair alike in Shanghai is quite resembly the sort of New York. Maybe you can recall the scences in the hot TV episodes Sex & City. Wow, They two really resemble each other.
Well, my opinion on that is very straight and simple: Once you've been here, go with it, you will find pepper in it, you will find interest while you indulge yourself in it. So be yourself.
As a matter of fact, dicking around in Shanghai is very common. What you don't quite see is that huge part of people in Shanghai, either expats or locals, is practicing their enjoyment in different ways. Most of Chinese also do that, but you haven't noticed that. Everyone just doing what they can and waht they should.

Cultural differences in form or frequency of delivery perhaps, yet it's not as if most people naively beleive lao wei goblet cells don't secrete mucous or us whities don't occasionally hock up local pollutant-inspired phlegm balls.
