Post subject: School field trips in China

Since starting school here this semester, my children have had school field trips to a couple of museums in Shanghai, and I've noticed that unlike in the US, the museums offered nothing in the way of special programming or even a guide to show the children around. The kids, in small groups accompanied only by the teachers and parent chaperones, were essentially left to their own devices, which was not very educational at all and at times rather chaotic. I'm just wondering if this is typical for school field trips here?

Chaos can be a learning experience, too. Wink

My daughter's class went to the S&T Museum on Friday. The kids were given a great worksheet to complete while they were there to help guide their visit.

It's not really the museum that would be responsible but the teachers who are organizing the trip. My kids have had a variety:
-S&T museum with a worksheet approach (similar to sbergman's experience)
-outdoor trips - Oriental Greenboat and Tianma Golf - organized biking, boating, rock climbing, swimming, golfing, etc
-GM factory - lecture and tour - kids asked great questions
- Chinese trips - to Yu Yuan, QiBao - sort of a scavenger hunt where photos had to be collected of a variety of items and conversations needed to take place with vendors, etc.
-older kids - week long trips - well organized - habitat builds, cultural trips, etc.

Usually it's up to the teachers to organise anything. The few times we've had guides from different places (like the aquarium),their English has been terrible and they have not been able to keep the kids focussed at all. Much easier for the teachers to do some research ahead of time and lead the tour themselves - means the kids are more in control too.

S and T museum didn't do anything when we went - teachers have to do it all.

Worksheet was from the teachers, not the museum.

I agree. Our field trips are planned at least 6-8 weeks out, with pre-trip visits by the various head teachers, so that we can brief our teachers on the excursion venue and prepare worksheets for the children. Good field trips are actually a matter of good planning and execution by the teachers, otherwise they can be quite meaningless.
