Agree with dfoo, RuiFu Yuan is a pretty decent choice, used to be the "regular" after-coffee meeting lunch spot for years. I think they have another location on Moa Min near Fuxing Rd.
I like Paul's, (Bao Luo) on FuMing Rd. Its just mainstream enough for tourists and expats and yet local enough to give everyone a decent taste of how Shanghai foods are, good and bad. |

We discovered Fu 1088 (375 Zhenning Lu, near Yuyuan Lu 镇宁路375号, 近愚园路) a couple of weeks ago - very good! |

Globus: I heard about a Fu 1039, is it the same as the one you recommended? Did I make a mistake with the numbers?
Anyway, thanks for all the replies! Also heard about lao ji shi (62829260) and lan gui fang (62740084). Any comments on these restaurants? |

jn78: Fu1088 and Fu1039 aren't the same, I had a reservation mix up and found out the hard way. 1039 does a very tasty Hongshaorou. |

Agreed it is not great looking and is quite small, but many of the famous dine there when they are in town. Or try Lynne on Xikang Lu opposite Plaza 66, nicer surroundings plus the menu is geared more in favour of the Laowai. |

Doesn't Lynne offer Cantonese dishes? Heard it has good dimsum buffet in the weekends. |

^ It does I think, only had a couple of evening dinners there and have not tried their buffet yet. I think Swiss James did a report on that a while back. |

Shanghai Old Restaurant (Shanghai Lao Fan Dian) in Old City Temple (cheng huang miao) is very good--classical Shanghai dishes. Expensive (the eel), and slow, but Gosh, the food is terrific!
Several other restaurants on Jin Xian Road---Lan Cun. And the one in Old Jinjiang hotel (sorry forgot the name). |

I really like that place to but you have to avoid the bus loads of chinese tourists they have every now and then. And on the weekends I always see someone throwing up from too much Bai Jiu in the bathrooms. |

SH Mag ran a good review of Paradise Garden in the mall adjacent to the Jinmao tower http://www.shmag.cn/review/utopia_1. We ourselves haven't made time to go over the river to check them out yet, but I generally trust SH reviews.
Cheers,
Globus
PS to Jn 78: I believe the numeric question has been answered already. We've been only to Fu 1088, I think that the other one is run by the same management. |
