Post subject: Fun Activities for Kids?

My man's 2 children (boy, 13-girl,11) are coming for a visit at the end of the month. I've been searching everywhere for ideas on things to do in Shanghai. This week's City Weekend looked promising but was actually a bit threadbare. Does anyone have any suggestions on fun things to do? The girl is a waterbaby and the boy is never far from a screen. All suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

There is a place called Think Town, somewhere in the Jing An/Zhong SHan Park area (a mall called Amanda Plaza), it is a great thing for older kids if done on w week day (it has all sorts of things they cam experiment, like zero gravity, a zipper line, racing one a race-track like place against a computer, then in a different section it has a real size car they can paint on, science experiments, really really cool. My friend's kids had their 9th and 10th bday parties there and they had a blast.

Also, the science and technology Museum is great, a whole day activity, with everything from a walk through all climate zones and their specific plants and animals, to dancing robots, robot shows and 4d movies.

If the weather stays warm, Dino Beach is amazing, a big and fun water park, but again, only on a week day or it will be packed and there will be 2-hour long waits for a slide ride.

Hope this helps.

You can take them to visit the Bund and then do the Sigthseeing Tunnel to cross from Puxi to Pudong. While on the Pudong side, the Shanghai Aquarium is a fun way to spend a few hours of the day (unless of course if they are from Sydney and have been regulars at the Sydney Aquarium!). For the children at 11 & 13, they may enjoy shopping and bargaining for stuff at Yuyuan, Pearl Market or Science & Tech Museum basement, especially the boy since you can get electronic games there while the girl can shop for fashionable "branded" wears. Shopping for the cheapy stuff was surprisingly a big hit for my niece (13) and my nephew (15) when they visited.

For that age group maybe these ideas would work --

Indoor skiing -- Yinqixn Indoor skiing at #1835, Qi Xin Lu., Minhang District

Ice skating -- The ice skating rink at Zhenda Guangchang, Lujiazui, Pudong

Visiting the aquarium -- Shanghai Aquarium, Lujiazui, Pudong

Go Karting -- Aomen Lu Disc Kart Center 326 Aomen Lu , Jiang Ning Lu Shanghai

Rock Climbing -- Ozark Rock Climbing Center 1 Jiang Su Lu, Shanghai

A boat ride -- A boat ride on the Haung Pu at night

Shopping, eating and souvenir buying at Yu Yuan; also teh inside garden is worth seeing

Buy silk and get a qipao made for the girl at Dongjiadu fabric market

Buying and flying kites at Century Park

Imax theater at the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum

A trip to Dino Beach water park

All the regular tourist venues Bund, the city planning hall, the Shanghai museum, Nanjing road, Yuyan (as already mentioned above, the Pearl TV tower, Song Qing Ling's house), Longhua Temple, Jing An Temple etc...

Big malls like Super Brand (Zhengda and Ganghui) for smoothies and shopping -- most kids love that

Oh yeah there is this enormous Chinese restaurant in Puxi that in Puxi (forget teh name and location) where the waiters have to use skates to get around -- might be memorable and fun for that age of kids.

Happyhere, wow, thank you so much. That's exactly the kind of list I wanted, but in fact, more than I could have ever expected. Several of those items I had no idea about. I do believe this should be a "stickey" at the beginning of this section. You rock!!

Oh, and thanks to the rest of you, everyone had such great ideas. Unless the kids wanted to shop or eat, I wasn't sure what we'd do with them. Smile

Texasgirl -- glad to help. That age can be petty daunting.

I also remembered two other things –

Chinese acrobatics -- there are two troupes/locations that usually put on 60-90 minute nightly shows. They are really fun to go to especially if you plan a meal around the evening. Catching a show and a meal makes any tween or teenager feel a bit of an adult.

Shanghai Acrobatics troupe that perform at the Shanghai Centre Theatre on Nanjing Xi Lu

Shanghai Circus World on Gonghe Xin Lu, in Zhabei

Bowling –There are tons of alleys in Shanghai. But I personally like the less crowded and cleaner lanes at the Purple Mountain Hotel in Lujiazui – right across from the Intercontinental Hotel. I think you can call to reserve.

have fun

Beware of Think Town! My son, 6-yr old, broke his arm while he was there 2 weeks ago. He was there with his uncle (visiting) so I do not have full details of the incident. Just be careful.
