Yeah, except most of them ignore that and take the meaning as "bug the sh*t out of me further". F*ck off already! I'm NOT ever going to give you money. I tell you... some of these bastards just will not take the hint! Yell, scream, whatever. Money money money.

Gao Wen is more of a harsher Zou Kai and usually does the trick. Especially if you adopt the air of a British person (or British Colonies, in your case dfoo), visiting the Far East and looking down one's nose at the locals.

Of course the best thing to do is avoid any place where there are loads of beggars. Tongren Lu - someone please fire bomb that alley of human shite.

tongren lu. fu min lu. dong ping lu. nan jing lu. guang dong lu. All highly popular!

The disfigured, the disabled begging is one thing. Its the middle aged women with small children that really piss me off. I wish the police would clear out these human feces instead of standing in front of foreigner complexes asking for passports!

i saw this beggar 2 blocks away from Jing An, he looked like he was in his 30s and he was screaming "gei wo fan!/ wo yao fan!" (give me food/rice) and he was banging his head (and you can hear the impact of his forehead) on the concrete floor after screaming "gei wo fan", and there were a lot of people during this time of the day, well, talk about scaring off your potential "clients". I mean, it's ridiculous, he looks able bodied, he could work in construction or something. what the hell are some people throwing away their lives for? Shouldn't the local government relocate these beggars and have them do some productive work for a living?

According to some of my friends, the able bodied beggars can go to an unemployment type office, and the government will find them work, whether it's street cleaning, or bathroom attendant somewhere.

Beggars that they've talked to say they're not about to do that, as they can make more money from tourists, and sympathetic locals then they can with a legitimate job.

Luckily not that many beggars in Jinshan district, but I've noticed the ones that are here, are much more willing to be physical, ie: grab your coat and not let go, chase you down the street.

Hubby got chased into Pizza Hut here by one. Guy saw him from half a block away, and started chasing after him screaming "Lao Wai! Money! Lao Wai". Went up to the Pizza Hut where J was ordering dinner, and tried to get in, banging on the windows with his begging bowl, screaming at the Chinese waitresses to let him in because the laowai "had" to give him money. Manager had to come down and help them keep the door closed. Eventually they had to get security guards from the building next door to come and drag him away, the whole time he was still screaming that my husband "had" to give him money since he was a lao wai.

The waitresses and manager must have spent 10 minutes apologizing for it, and were obviously embarrassed about the whole situation. Meanwhile, J felt bad since they had to deal with the guy too!

I suppose I have to give the guy points for persistence... no idea what they did with him, but he definitely doesn't beg around that area anymore!

I don't have any facts, but I think a lot of these people are afflicted with mental illnesses.

I thought about the whole issue a lot before deciding that the above was the best way to put money in the hands of people who need it.

(Kids shouldn't be begging on the street and the one way you can make sure they stay begging on the street is to give them money)

I don't know about here, but in many countries people will mutilate the children they send out begging, as they will tend to make more money.

What I sometimes like to do is quickly grab the little kid and jump into a taxi to another part of town, then put the child to work begging for me. I'm going to retire next month!

I know a family who has been begging on Tong Ren Rd since before i got here. Saw their daughter grow up from babe-in-arms to teh cutest beggar kid you have ever met and finally one day she was gone. Last year i saw her during the holidays and she said she had to go home to go to school and that her mom had a baby so she has little sister now so they could continue making a living while she went to school. Sad Considering the period of time many of us knew this kid and how upfront she was from the beginning, I believe its true...and rather sad. the ayi that sells cigs in front of Malones confirmed the story actually too. She said this was one of the good ones. She was one that even the bouncers at Malones allowed to hang a little closer to the door because she didnt harass anyone and her personality and cuteness worked to her advantage.

I don't know if it's the same kid but there was one that was so cute I seriously considered kidnapping her and yes, I gave her a few kuai each time simply because there was no way to not give!

Anyone else think this is a problem born of the 10,000:1 rich to poor ratio? Who's at the top? Viva Ben n Jerrys, minimum wage and Karl Marx.

Green Book is the Real Estate Property, ie a Deed to a house/apartment.

Basically 90%+ of all Shanghainese, all they really care about other then money, is that **** green book, if you want to date a Shanghainese, you best get yourself at least one or two of those "green books", this is a fact, and stfu if u don't know what ur talkin about.

Hey, moron ... we're talking about a "little green book ... in his dish." The deed is A4 sized so WTF do you figure it is little and can fit in a dish?

Easy there killer, seems I misread the post, as in a Begger, with a Begging Dish or Plate size in diameter, wide enough to place a document to which I mentioned, but rather, more clarification is needed, walk up to someone, and tell them, "Hey, a green book and a dish?", and not many will reply with "Oh yea, the green book and dish, what?, you don't know what that is?", like adding apples and oranges.

Favorite beggar memory - was walking with a friend in Hanghzhou when we picked up some old bat, hanging onto my arm and whining "laoban ! laoban !" in that annoying way. Looked ahead, there's three chinese guys in suits coming the other way. Wait. Wait. Wait, NOW ! perfect hip shot, blew her right into the middle of the impotent-looking buzzynessmen.

We walked on to the happy sounds of four Chinese people screaming at each other Very Happy

don't give them anything!!!
I've been with some laowai friends of mine and they were attacked by kids once he gave 1 kuai to a kid...the kids literally grabbed his leggs and was climbing up him and the other guy (they're both above 185cm tall) and whaddaya know, some of these kids were reaching into his pockets!!!!

Hmmm, yeah maybe need to read better next time Wink makes no sense that a title deed book would fit there not to mention it makes no sense in the context described. then again, I disagree with your comments about 90%+ too. many that Laowai and others who do not intermingle at all with actual shanghainese and not the wannabes woudl probably find that number extremely high. But then again its your sampling so 90%+ of your local friends may be that way.
