Is there another way to donate besides using the Red Cross?
If the Chinese Red Cross is anything like the US Red Cross, a lot of money gets wasted and or / stolen before finding its way to victims in need. |

I'm talking to a former colleague of mine, the company has schools all throughout that area. If they know local charity agencies & such for specific smaller towns, something might be organized for aid & donations.

Stuff like this. They have a school in Wenchuan that is okay. If they're game, could be a nice distribution point. |

| Post subject: Sichuan earthquake: what can laowais do to help? |
Reports now indicate that the death toll will surpass 10,000. Obviously at magnitude 7.8 in a heavily populated area where most structures have little seismic resistance, there will be a heavy loss of life.
At this point I, and I'm sure many other foreigners who have chosen to live our lives in China are wondering what we can do to help. Give blood, donate blankets, supplies etc.? Could someone suggest what numbers to call, what websites to visit, etc.? Someone said the China Red Cross site was down.
We expats love to complain about our little problems in China but a major catastrophe like this surely transcends all of that, and as people who have made our homes in this country, I strongly feel we have a moral duty to do our part here.
So, how about it? Who has some good information? |

MD-Visa? Nice one, YinLin.
But it does sound kind of familiar. |

Anybody want to make bets that China will handle this disaster better than the U.S. handled Katrina ????
With the immediate mobilization that I've seen splashed across the wire, I'm guessing that China is going to rise to the occasion.
Thoughts ? |

I don't see how they could not handle it better than FEMA handled Katrina.
I certainly do hope -- and expect -- China does as good as job as possible to mitigate the damage of this earthquake and to provide for the unfortunate victims. |

Will they handle better than the major quakes in the US? How many building collapses were there in the US during the last 2 major quakes in LA & SF? |

not this many obviously. and yes, they will more thanlikely handle it better than FEMA did Katrina. Sad commentary on how well the worlds leading democratic country works (or doesnt) under pressure huh? Kinda hard to bomb someone when its mother nature you are up against. |

China earthquake: 10,000 still buried after earthquake
By Richard Spencer in Chengdu and Tom Peterkin
Last Updated: 9:53AM BST 13/05/2008
As many as 10,000 people are said to be trapped under rubble following a massive earthquake in China which has already claimed the lives of an estimated 10,000 victims.
Local officials have said thousands "remain buried" in Mianzhu, a town close to the epicenter of the worst Chinese earthquake for 30 years.
A group of 15 British tourists are also among the missing.
The devastated southwest province was rocked by a strong aftershock today which sent office workers running out onto the streets.
The tremor measured 6.1 on the Richter scale and shook Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, at around 3:10 pm (0710 GMT), state media announced.
A wave of terrifying aftershocks in the region has impeded rescue operations, the Sichuan provincial seismological bureau said.
Today the Foreign Office confirmed that a group of British citizens, holidaying near the epicentre of the earthquake, are missing.
But officials were unable to confirm reports that they were trapped and had yet to hear of any Brits killed or injured.
"But we are aware of British tourists in the affected area and we are trying to establish their whereabouts," the spokesman said.
Embassy staff have been experiencing difficulty in getting through to hotel telephones and mobiles.
A small team from the embassy has been dispatched to Chengdu, a city of 11 million people 50 miles south of the epicentre.
An eight person rapid response team has been sent to Congqing, where there have been reports of casualties.
They are trying to contact people reported missing by relatives.
China's official Xinhua News Agency reported that a group of 15 "were out of reach" this morning in Wenchuan at the heart of the earthquake that struck yesterday reaching 7.9 on the Richter Scale.
China said today that it "welcomed" the offers of aid that have come in from around the world, without clarifying what type of aid had been received.
"After the earthquake, the international community offered its support and sympathy to China. China and its people express their thanks and their welcome toward that," foreign ministry spokesman Qin Gang said.
Tremors were felt more than 1,000 miles away in Bangkok and Hanoi.
Most of the casualties were in the Sichuan province and included a bus load of 37 tourists, who were killed when their coach was buried in a landslide in Maoxian county.
The 15 Britons are believed to be among 2,000 tourists stranded on the Aba prefecture in the province.
An official from the Sichuan provincial emergency management office said they were probably in Wolong, a protection and breeding centre for pandas.
The quake occurred at 2.30 pm on Monday when most children were in school.
At least 1,000 students and teachers were killed or missing after the earthquake reduced a high school east of the epicentre in Beichuan county to a pile of rubble.
A further 900 students were feared dead in another collapsed school.
Xinhua said up to 5,000 people were killed and 80 per cent of the buildings had collapsed in Beichuan. Almost 10,000 had died in the Sichuan province as a whole and another 300 had been killed in other provinces and the city of Chongqing.
The government has sent more than 16,000 troops into the area with tens of thousands to follow.
The Foreign Office's phoneline for those worried about the missing tourists is: 0086 105 192 4499. |

Yep agree, xilangan, but maybe this person could be forced to live in somewhere in Wenchuan, for punishment. Just heard on Australia Network that deaths are now 21,000. Seems China Govt. is doing every thing it can. They are busy now, but need also to put pressure on Mianmar Military dictatorship to let aid, which has been donated from all over the world, to help those about to die from the cyclone. |

Global warming can't cause an earthquake. Everybody knows that earthquakes happen because God is angry.
I am just waiting for the nut cases in the USA to come out and say that God did this to China because China is evil. The first amendment is a good thing, but sometimes I have to grit my teeth. I guess that is the whole point of the first amendment, to allow everybody to have their say, but still... |
