In the US there is an organization that actually rates charities use of money. www.Charitynavigator.org

I don't know if there is something similar world wide.

If you give to the Red Cross, do it anonymously. It may not be as sophisticated here but once they get you on their rolls in the States, you get solicited every other day. Even their gift receipts include another request.

The earthquake victims need help and fast. For those victims trapped in destroyed buildings, every hour that goes by diminishes their chances of survival. We all know that Giant Pandas are reputed to have the best sense of smell of any "domesticated" animal second only to the Norwegian Black Rat. I find it incredible that the 44 captive and 148 newly released captive bred Giant Pandas, that are located in Sichuan only 60km from the epicenter of the earthquake, are not being used in the rescue efforts of the victims still trapped buried alive. I do not want to sound racist at all as I am not, or critical of the government which I am not at all, but I suspect the authorities are more worried about these National Treasures being injured climbing amongst the destroyed buildings, than the people trapped beneath the buildings. This should not be a real issue as 2 pairs of modified sturdy climbing boots will give sufficient protection for the pandas feet from nails and broken metal. Food also should not be a problem as a friend of mine who worked with these Giant Pandas estimates that 4x 20T truck would hold sufficient bamboo to fee 192 pandas for 4 days. It is time to stop this procrastination and get some meaniful assistance for the earthquake victims.

^ Yes, you are a moron. How many people will die as the Pandas are taken to S&R Training ? What you want to put untrained animals in the middle of a natural disaster to do what ? Sleep ? Eat ?

Please, be like the panda and don't procreate on your own.

The Chinese military is more than capable of dealing with this situation, probably more so than any other place on Earth - add millions and millions of people to the equation and start digging / looking for survivors.... as crazy as it sounds probably better here than anywhere else (in terms of manpower).

Are you out of your tiny mind? Are you even aware of the skills that pandas possess in terms of seismology, irrigation systems and earthquake survivor retreaval?

They are the perfect candidates right now and they should be sent to the epicentre immediately.

I would be very careful with all those charities. Which are legit, which are not, or semi-legit... Which are CIA front organizations etc. Any suggestion the safest way to send money? Also it is probably not needed to send money for emergency relief, as the Chinese government and tens of millions of people are also doing that. They will end up with too much money, as happened before in Sri Lanka, Thailand etc. We better donate for people who are still alive, especially kids and their future.

Uh, I doubt that [not the extent of the damage], but the second part.

Seems like if China could get foreign nations to pick up the tab for the earthquake, it could continue to keep (subsidizing) the exploding economy.

Interesting twist in there, does China spend it's own reserves on it's own people or does it conveniently "delay" those funds, use foreign sympathy dollars, euros, etc. and keep bankrolling it's own reserves.

Hmmmmmm

Foreign reserves among other things are used to build infrastructure (which helps the country and people accross the board), couple of years ago some 20 billions or something were used to sanitize non-performing loans (which also delivers benefits accross the board), etc, etc, etc.

Also, it is common courtesy of any country, no matter how poor they are, to send help to countries that went through catastrophes. I remember the last earthquake in Japan Brazil sent a lot of money too.

So, perhaps it would be time to review a bit the notion of China = Government = Bad, which is very simplistic and ignorant.

My god, stop wasting precious time and get those pandas in there!!

The US sent 500K USD as a gesture more than anything else. I agree no matter what a countries financial situation, they will most likely try to be seen as sympathetic to China's disaster. I feel sorry fo the people affected by this horrible tragedy, we are sending cash at work. Cash seems to be the best thing to send, I fear the blood will be too late for many.

At first I thought that the 500K was an awful pittance but, given our trade deficit with China, it occurred to me that we are probably financing a good portion of the Chinese army and their equipment. As always, I am sure it will be the American people rather than our government that makes the significant donations - perhaps as it should be.

First let me say that I contributed cash at work today. They were taking donations in the Tokyo office. Seems catatstophes, especially earthquakes to the Japanese, transcend national squablles.

Will give blood next week. If it is too late for this catastophe, there will always be another

I state this because I do not want the next bit to be contrued as uncaring, cruelo and calloused...

Cash helps, I agree, but it's never too late to donate blood. Think of it this way... the survivors of this tragedy will surely take a significant portion of the blood supply as it is now, which means your average Shanghai accident victim wouldn't have access to much of this supply. It may not be helping Sichuan directly, but by giving, you're helping to keep the supplies up.

Got the first info on what Library Project is doing here. Will put out something a bit more official-sounding tomorrow. This is from facebook.

Library Project is www.library-project.org You'll know it if you ever listened to Shanghai Fox.

While the Sichuan earthquake gave us an excuse to get out of work early in Shanghai, it destroyed the schools and libraries of 1,000s of children in central China.

Raise money to rebuild (and build) the schools and libraries for orphans and migrant worker's children. Help through the emergency by giving safe shelter immediately, help in the long run to alleviate poverty through literacy and education. All you have to do is come party with your friends.

All donations go to The Library Project, a trustworthy, transparent, China-based charity.

First floor of Mesa. They'll make the drink specials worth your while, and Andrew Polins will make the music.

Don't thin your blood out too much though, because The Red Cross needs it. You can donate at safe clean places at:
Shanghai United Family Hospital: 21 5133-1968.

If you want to give blood and don't want to wait for a donation event you can go to the Shanghai Blood Center. http://www.sbc.org.cn/eng/

According to the website there are 20 donation sites throughout the city.

It's very safe - sealed sterilized equipment - and relatively easy to do. So round up some friends and go to one of the centers this weekend!

Edited to add that China does accept blood from those who lived in Europe in the 90s - unlike in the US.

Post subject: It is still difficult in Sichuan

This morning we have received photos from William (real name) who we have sponsored from the initial proceeds of the Quake Sweepstake. William who is a qualified doctor is now in Wenchuan County assisting on the ground. The photos are too graphic and sad to include with this post. People are still being literally pulled from the rubble after 3 days - as of yesterday evening. Local domestic pigs are being used to locate survivors. There has been no talk about utilizing the Giant Pandas from the nearby breeding station. When questioned, William said that the estimated 200 pandas even if made available would not be sufficient in numbers. Across the county an uncountable number of pigs are being used to locate survivors, being harvested for compatible blood plasma and of course food. In one of his photos which was really sad, there were what appeared to be 4 young infants feeding directly from a suckling pig. It would appear now that the main issue to looking after the survivors. It is time to put aside the recent xenophobism that erupted over the Olympic Torch and contribute. We will continue to run the Quake Sweepstake until such time as some sort of normality can be ensured in Sichuan. God bless you all.

Just walk down the street. "Blood bus!"

They really pester foreigners, I guess foreigners are more likely to give blood?

Anyway, they'll probably use my blood to sell to some other country and take my money to buy cars, so I'm saying no way on that one.
