Its he persecution complex coming out again from the Shanghai Daily that the whole world is anti China. CNNs reporting is not saying that the one child policy is bad. They are saying that the one child policy makes it worse for parents to lose their only child. Not so much substance in the CNN story but poor reporting from the Shanghai Daily.

There are MANY articles not only in CNN but in many, more actively anti-Chinese, media. One recurrent theme is: its worse to lose your only-child. At first sight, the reader may accept this. Nobody who think more than one second about it will agree. Those journalists are not stupid, they know how to use emotion for political means. The result is that China is presented as being bad on so many levels. Preventive strikes is probably what the red commies need. We are not there yet, but lets see in 2 years.

For those who read French, go and read Liberation's article: the quake was probably caused by dam construction and/or nuclear testing in central China; Chinese government use this opportunity for propaganda, to pretend they care for people; they also use this to make us forget about the crisis in t¡bet and clamp down on various separatists; because of the one-child policy, grief and pain is multiplied; they dont let foreign rescue workers to enter the country freely, thus delaying rescue effort; the government doesnt properly supervise local school contruction because it is so corrupt and incompetent, hence all the school destroyed; in the meantime, China continues to sponsor genocide in Darfour etc. etc. Hello Pascale Nivelle, enjoying life in Beijing, at the heart of this Red Hell on Earth?

1. Can you conclude that the "one-child'' policy has led to more boys just from what you saw on the streets of Sichuan? What would you say if you see Shanghai streets dominated by women?

The FACT is that there are more boys in China than girls. And it's really out of kilter with the normal boy/girl ratio demographics. This is a serious issue.

As regards losing one child or losing three - of course it's nonsense.

What will be strange is that many communities, villages or maybe even towns may have a very low 'young' population in the near future.

Of course there is also the economic factor. I saw one woman speaking after her daughter was found dead and she said "I am 39 and my husband is 44. Who will look after us now when we get old?" Of course I'm sure they love their kids as much as any parents in the World but the children in China often do play a big role in supporting their parents as they get older. So the one child policy is definately a factor making the tragedy worse for many people. Not a criticism of the one child policy though.

In the end it is always a criticism of communism. Journalists dont like to discuss the fundamental cause of the gender imbalance in China. On the contrary they all praise the old traditions. Hello, Confucius!

I think hammer-for-life is right. The problem is compounded by economics. My understanding is that in the countryside a child is the only social security system. No social insurance like many people in the cities enjoy. I also think it is common for people who have lost a child to say that needing to be strong for their other children helped them to get through it.

This doesn't excuse assumptive reporting, though. I had some Catholic friends visiting and they kept commenting on how few children they saw on the streets. I had a hard time convincing them that it was because the kids were in school and daycare - not murdered by Chinese policies.

I heard a reporter asking yesterday about children orphaned by the quake. I keep hoping that the silver lining in this might be a changed attitude in China towards adoption.

Some statistics from the New England Journal of Medicine based on a study done in Denmark:

Quote:
The risk of being hospitalized for any psychiatric problem was greatest in the year following the loss of a child, but it remained elevated for five years. And parents who lost their only child were more likely to be hospitalized than those with surviving children.

Good post, sbergy but I believe the article wasn't motivated by science. Good to have Catholics around, I hope they are consistent with their belief, will vote to stop USrael murdering of innocents in other countries (oops sorry they can't, those who opposed it have all been eliminated already) and will resist the pedophile lobby promoting adoption by guy couples. What I mean really is that the West has much to do to fix their own gigantic problems before they can give any lesson to China.

Pascale Nivelle's article accurately expose those facts only a Chinese mainlander knows... and they do not want other people say if for them.

I am a Chinese, used to live in China, mainland, hated the communist gov, and got out long time ago.

I am surprised to see now the western journalist can understand this gov/country so well.

It is not pleasant for a Chinese to read that article, but everything in it is true.

I am worried about her safety, and she must already know it if she knows this coutnry so well.

Amony all the terrible issues in China, one-child policy is nothing.

The biggest sucess of the communist gov is to brianwash so many Chinese, it is not the whole world is against China, it is the other way around: China is against everything in this world, humanity, good value.

Ronald Reagon once commented: Chinese communists are evil vampires. true.

you would expect the Chinese would be angry at their government for such a degree of corruption, which caused deaths of their children (near 7000 schools collapsed while 95% government buildings stands), but it turns out it is still so easy (as it always was) for the government to take the disaster as a chance to stablize and secure their leadership. Amazingly, they turn the anger to the western media... just pay a little attention, and it is not hard at all to find out the plan and the action: they are evilnizing the western media for their reports on human rights concerns raised during torch relay, as well as the kind of article written by Pascale Nivelle...

Chinese people wanted the respect from the world so badly, and they know they still don't have it... thus they decide to grab it or they think they can MAKE the world respect them by force or using money... sometimes it actually doesn't work, so they are angry now, maybe a little crazy...

I feel very sad that I love Chinese traditional culture, I am a Chinese, but I feel so shamed.

The usual persecution mania. . . Still obsessed the western media is trying to 'blacken China' even in the wake of a massive earthquake.

As for the one child thing:

- Of course there is a gender imbalance.

- Of course it is worse to lose all your children (including your only child) than just one.

- Of course Chinese take losing their children especially badly. Besides children providing economic security in old age they are into freaking ancestor worship - who is going to carry out rites for you if you have no descendants?

- Since rural and ethnic minority areas were especially badly hit by the quake the numbers of 'only child victims' will be lower than if it had struck elsewhere.

Source of this data oh unnamed newbie? I know the 7000 schools part, but 95% if WHAT government buildings? Built in same era? Same area? Careful of the data you use. While I have no doubt that substandard materials were used in teh school buildings, pulling bad data only undermines one's comments.

Here's a question. After someone has a child under the one-child policy, if the child should die, are the parents allowed to have another child?

I ask because I don't know.

Good question.

I can only imagine that the parents can have another child as it is 'The One Child Policy'.

Actually, Chinese parents can have more than one child but they must pay 'Extra Child Tax' or whatever it is. This cost is not fixed - I think it's mean tested. And often you will find quite a considerable age difference between the first and second child.

An only child man and his only child wife are allowed to have two kids. I think this is the CCP's attempt to cover the cracks in the failures of the one child policy, but way too late in my opinion.

Of course the one-child policy makes it monetarily worse for the parents when you lose your only child, isn't that a no-brainer? Doesn't mean that the parents necessarily grieve any more or less, but that isn't what the CNN report is saying.

The Shanghai Daily article is a perfect example of the current rising nationalistic fashion here of poo-poo-ing anything the western media says about China. Sad times once again, this is turning into a really really awful year for China, even earthquake aside.
