Relax, the state does not want you to have to worry about this. All will be well shortly. Premiere Wen Jiao Bao is flying in to PERSONALLY supervise the rescue and recovery operations. He is even wearing a windbreaker--fully zipped--to show he means business. |

Sadly, the toll may rise exponentially, as reports from worst affected regions come in, luckily it's sparsely populated. Magnitude 7.8 is huge. The epicentre is about 1500 km from Shanghai, that's a long way to feel anything. |

I was watching CNN for a bit. A few times they said the official number came in first from 3000-5000 dead, then minimum 3000 dead, then minimum 5000 dead, now its back to 3000-5000. |

When I saw it first on the news this afternoon it said there was no major damage. I could not believe it, because 7.8 is a big one. And the way they build here, there's got to be major damage. Meanwhile I heard as much as 8000 casualties. This is sad. I am still surprised that 3 gorges dam was built in a known major earthquake area. Don't want to think about what would happen if that one goes. |

One reason initial news showed no damage was it only covered ChengDu and ChongQing. It wasnt until more reports of damage in the smaller cities came in that news started coming out .
One of our staff is form that area. Seems much of her town/village has been damaged with only the most recent structures staying virtually undamaged while older housing took a hit. While flattened was the word she used, I suspect it may be a lost in translation issue so... wishful thinking on my part that its not as bad as it sounded... |

Remember the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami? Initial reports reported hundreds of deaths, but a long way away, nothing from near the epicentre. I immediately estimated 10^5 deaths and sadly it turned out to be a conservative estimate.
I'll make a conservative estimate of 10^4 deaths in this case, fearing more like 10^5.
Then there's this situation in Burma/Myanmar after cyclone Nargis. Satellite photos showed the huge Irrawaddy delta mostly underwater. About 10^5 deaths for sure, maybe 10^6 if the paranoid regime continues to keep aid workers out. Another thread maybe. |

good thought bro. Actually usually I would say the Red Cross, but it seems their site is down so no news yet. We may well need to wait a bit before we can help. Sigh. |

Thanks yu888, I gotta say I am a numbers person and that is bad. I was just looking if there was something local. I will try Red Cross Tomorrow or the next day. Hope they make it easier than the last one. |

In last six months China has faced unprecedented Snow Fall, more than 20,000 kids getting infected with EV 71 (more than 30 dead, as of now)and now a massive earth quake (over 5,000 ppl reported dead as of now)
For some reason, mother nature sure seems to be unhappy with this country.
Is it global warming or the curse of the ppl who were uprooted from their lands to make way for the new structures for the upcoming Olympics?
Whatever it is, i hope this is it and something worse does not happen till Olympics. |

well its gotta be easier to help than Myanmar eh? China red cross' site seems to be overloaded but given photos of the disater areas show red cross relief tents in some fo the backgrounds, they are obviously there.
And yeah the numbers look bad. AP reporting 9600 deaths |

Donate blood. That may be a good start. Wednesday there is a blood drive locally sponsored by the Shanghai Red Cross Blood Center and Shanghai United Family Hospitals. Actually 2 of our old Ayi's come from Chongqing, the last one went back 3 months ago. Fingers crossed and hope they are ok. Just watching the news now on ICS, showing CCTV footage of local workers running to the Lifts.. |

I should be going to bed.. funny I am following the news of the earthquake hoping and praying that more ppl are not injured or killed.
It seems that only those on higher floors (20 and above) felt it? I was on a high floor and felt it but at the time did not know what it was. Like many others I also felt 'dizzy, giddy' or 'light headed' . certainly didn't see or feel or hear anything like furniture move. |

Aftershocks continue to plague the area as a 4.8 hit teary this morning before 5am. I cann only imagine how people there are scared to be inside are going to fare in the coming days...

Casualties nearing 10,000 from this disaster now. Rock slides and earth movements hamper relief efforts to even reach the epicenter and other isolated communities; still thousands buried in various locations near the epicenter; some villages reporting hundreds dead and up to 85%% of buildings in ruins. (here the poor workmanship, cutting corners and lack of minimum codes in the recent past which keeping up with the boom may finally be coming back to haunt everyone. Sigh.

Open your calendar to six months from now and pencil in "visit Chengdu". When things like this happen there's a lot of aid and relief in the immediate aftermath and then things get bad when the economy falls apart several months out. Give now and plan to visit later. |
