| Post subject: anyone know who to complain to about a bad lawyer? |
hired a chinese lawyer whose firm is supposed to have a good rep, and he didn't do anything. even left his intern to talk to me and refused my phone calls after i gave him money.
how can i get my retainer fee returned? is there an association or committee to complain to? |

Call this number: 021.I.just.got.jacked.888 should do the trick. |

The Shanghai Bar Association is probably the best place to start--http://www.lawyers.com.cn/. Alternatively, you might want to contact the Shanghai municipal government http://www.shanghai.gov.cn/shanghai/node17256/index.html
Complaints to the Bar here do not carry the same weight as in the US. Still, I can assure you that local lawyers do not enjoy being reported or, occasionally, investigated.
Before taking this step consider: Is your complaint valid? Did the lawyer clearly not perform or did you simply not get the answer you had hoped for? Is your position supported by facts that are well-documented (i.e., an engagement letter spelling out the scope of services, receipts, faxes, emails, other deliverables); have you made it clear to the lawyer that you are disatisfied with his performance and are now considering filing a complaint (not required but shows good faith)?
Good luck |
