| Post subject: Tailor made suits |
Hello all,
Where can I have reasonable quality suits made in Shanghai?
I looked up some posts on this topic, but they're from quite awhile ago.
Is the fabric market any good? Which stall/tailor is recommended?
Possible to have "okay to nice" quality suits for under RMB1000?
Thanks. |

Quick answer is ...Yes.... it's possible... but it is still a "hit and miss" at the fabric market.
PM Yu888, I think he founds one he was happy with....but you need to have a little bit of patient....ok... lots of patients |

Most are OK as long as you are prepared to go back for alterations 2-4 times until the fit is perfect. If you don't have patience to wait for the alterations, then it is really hit or miss. Just because you get a great fit at a tailor once does not mean you will get a great fit there the next time. Both fabric market at 399 Lujiabang Lu and the custom fabric shops at Science & Technology museum can offer good value and quality. The custom clothing vendors at S & T museum are hurting right now as the custom clothing business is really just being developed there at this time so I have been able to bargain better deals there. rmb1000 should be no problem depending on the quality of the fabric you select. |

The Bund Soft-Spinning Material Market is OK. You can get a suit with 1 pair of trousers made from 180S cashmere for about 800 RMB. An extra pair of trousers for 200 RMB more. (It might not really be 180S but it looks, feels, and wears like 180S.) My only complaint is that they line the trousers (too hot to wear) and they make the pockets too small in both the trousers and the jackets.
All the tailors there have a good selection of catalogues so you can easily select your style. |

yea, they should really know better especially since they think all foreigners have deep pockets. On a more serious note, they actually also tend to make pockets out of a lightweight silk or silky material that does not hold the stitching very well for all the junk we tend to put in our pockets so it is also a good idea to ask for re-inforced pockets with double stitching and specific pocket material. |

I'll copy and paste this text I found back when doing a search for tailors in SH;
For the best suit in the world at the best price, I would go to W.W.Chan, 129-A02 Maoming Nan Lu (tel. +86-21/5404-1469; www.wwchan.com), because the law in China sidesteps certain taxes. The same suit you'd get at Chan's Hong Kong shop is 20% less in Shanghai.
Also note that once you've been properly fitted in person in China (Hong Kong or Shanghai) you can order in the US when the firm makes one of their twice-a-year tours. You will pay $800 to $1,200 for a suit that if made in NYC or London would cost $4,000 or more.
And don't forget a few shirts to go with it.
Perhaps it's bit to pricey?, but I thought it might be good to mention.
Cheers |

hi
we just had three suits made for our guest from home country.
900rmb altogether.(180S one n two 300S-it looked n felt so).
he was in hurry so couldn't do many fitting trials, they were all light weight ,fitting was good he said, just as he went back.
it starts with 270-300 rmb per suit.
if u want really good quality it might cost you around 600-900 rmb.
my friends here do it for the same price.
we had it done in bund soft spinning materials market.
lujiabang lu is a little expensive but more with varieties n quality.
it all depends on ur bargaining skills.
n yes westerners always get a hiked price. |

How much do you reckon a tailored shirt should cost out of interest?
I've been paying around RMB 100-130 depending on quality of material at S&T, and they really wear quite well. Comfortable too.
Too expensive or about right do you think? |

so we have $1000 suits or $100 suits.
how about something good around $250? I'd like to find someone with a recognized good reputation, but hasn't let it send their prices out of control. |

I would forget about those cheap suits. If your budget is less than 2000 RMB, I would suggest you go for nice off-the-shelf suits (I mean unless you are elephant-size or something). For a good taylor made suit, my best recommendation is Dave (288 Wu Yuan Lu, between Wulumuqi Lu & Wu Kang Lu, in a big house at the end of a small lane). Be careful I am not talking about the fake Dave in Portman (dodgy local partner who kicked out the real Dave and stole his business). Suits are rather more expensive, I have never made one cheaper than 5k, but they are perfect. |

Good quality custom shirts rmb75 - rmb 120 depending on material, quantity purchased and relationship with tailor. Quality of material and origin of material appear to have greatest impact on price. |

I've made 4 suits at Dave W'yuan lu (i.e. not that P'man wanker). All have been fully ok & were between 4-5K rmb with 2 trousers. Price value is good. Never issues with suits, though some of the cheaper shirts proved to be dissapointments (better focus on higher quality materials). |

There is a tailor, Mr. Wu, in the Taikang Lu artsy area. He has a very very small shop across from a tea shop. He made all of my suits. I only used imported fabrics, so it was pricier, but I highly recommend him. PM me if you want his #, I can dig it up. |

My hubby paid about 500-600rmb each for his suit, good quality cashmere. You can feel the difference between the cheap and nasty stuff and the better quality stuff.
He pays about 90 for each shirt and has had stacks made. The fabric is different for each kind so feel the quality too and don't just choose based on colour/pattern/design (as we have learnt!) This is from the fabric market. If you want the really good quality stuff I think you have to go to Maoming Rd and pay a lot more. |

We will be in Shanghai for only 3 days. Is it possible to get a suit and some shirts made in such short of time? Is there a 'go to' tailor that we can just go to and not worry about quality. We are willing to pay a premium for fast and reliable quality. Thank you. |
