Post subject: Age on resume?!

I am applying jobs through this site and it requires me to put in my date of birth. I think age bias is quite serious in China given I often see jobs stating age preference. While I know it is a common practice in China to include all personal details plus photo (!), how honest will you be if you are filling in those online resume and do not have the choice to skip DOB?

Nonsense. Of course age is an important criteria - which anyway can be deducted from your graduation year, years of experience etc. Pic is another thing, but it is always better to know how people look like, you feel better prepared when meeting them etc. Now you are even talking about lying when filling the online resume? I can tell you that my company do not need employees like you, thats for sure!

Did I ever say I'm going to lie? Why are you being so obnoxious? In America, you are not supposed to disclose age and let alone posting your picture. Being a manager myself, I find it biased to first look at the picture before the interview.

It looks like you fit well in China!

LAILA...
In the US it is illegal to ask for age and photo.

Here it is standard practice....so if you want to apply for a job here. DOB and picture.

Be very honest....as crambonne heavy handidly pointe out, it can be deduced from other facts anyways. And no one hires some one they think has "inconsistencies" on their CV

Laila your question implied you we considering lying in your resume. Who cares what is done in the US? Age is a simple indicators of your experience, maturity and cost. Without age, I would look at graduation date. Or years of experience. I dont understand what you are talking about "age bias". Age is a major criteria in the recruitment process, the very first thing you should look at.

(Btw I assume we are not talking about jobs like cleaner, waiter, receptionist, etc... where you could argue that age is not connected to performance or even salary)

While it is true that a potential employer can normally deduce an applicant's age by reviewing his/her resume, it is not fool-proof especially in non-Asian countries where an applicant can go to school part-time or return to school after years of work. I am a manager and I will never ask for someone's age or request for a picture. I make the decision by looking at his/her work experience and his/her performance during the interview. My original question was "how honest will you be ...". I merely find this requirement annoying, and I object to Cambronne's comment that "age is a major criteria". It should be experience, good Christian!

Well, in China, age is a major requirement. And so are nationality and race (if you are applying for English teaching jobs for instance)...So if you don't disclose those it is assumed you have something to hide...

Right right. I know they like to disclose everything. No, nothing to hide, just trying to understand and get used to the system.

Yep-just the way it is.No room for western hiring practices here-especially in the teaching business.

Agreed.. I was signing up to Zhao Ping and was shocked the site required more info then immigration.

I too am offended by the hiring practices but as everyone here points out its common practice if you want to go through the front door here in China.

Fortunately nothing is ever done by going through the front door here in China, and you are more likely to find a job via connections that won't ask for these things.

When looking to hire an ayi with 5 years experience in dealing with expat children...
When seeking to hire a packaging technician who will design boxes for shipping fans...
When trying to hire a driver...
When recruiting an architect to lay out the bathrooms of a retail establishment...
When employing an accountant to do basic bookkeeping...
When hiring an applications programmer to set up spreadsheet templates...

Age is the very first thing I should look at? Before experience, professional qualifications, criminal record, ability to communicate, punctuality, general manners?

Second thing to look at being only candidates who are at least 1.75m tall?

I agree with BitterExpat, height is the most important. Then Age.

Age & Height are not so important to people to get their jobs from those interviews, the most important is people their personalities and their qualities.

I was asked my age, marital status, gender and height. (I was applying for a training manager position) Those recruiters are absolutely ridiculous+clueless of what they really should do.
