ShanghaiExpat & Moon River Diner “Summer BBQ Benefit”
(31st May, 2008, Shanghai) ShanghaiExpat and Moon River Diner, both well known among the expatriate community here in Shanghai, collectively had the honor of hosting a fund-raising event for Half the Sky Foundation (HTS). This effort was directed at helping orphans and orphanages affected by the recent disaster in Sichuan. This event, along with an ongoing fund-raising effort, has raised a total of RMB42,512 in funds, including member donations matched in value by ShanghaiExpat. More than 100 people, including members of the ShanghaiExpat community as well as the volunteers and other folks who just wanted to come pitch in, came and showed their love to the orphans who suffered from the earthquake.
HTS is a US-based non-profit that takes care of orphans in China. It has put forth great effort, cooperating with China's Ministry of Civil Affairs and created the HTS CHILDREN'S EARTHQUAKE FUND to provide emergency and long-term relief to children in Sichuan and Chongqing who were affected by the quake. At latest count, nearly 1000 newly orphaned children survived the disaster, and combined with the destruction of many orphanages, there is great need for donations of all sorts. For now, donations of money are the easiest to get to the areas that most need assistance.
For these needs, ShanghaiExpat and Moon River Diner worked hand in hand to help this organization by putting together an ‘all-you-can-eat-drink’ BBQ event for 5 hours on a warm Sunday afternoon. Food, drinks, games, and more sponsored by Café Du Monde, Rouge Morille, Barbecue King - all while doing a good thing. There was a section for people to show their creativity in painting related images, and everyone was entertained by good vibes of music by DJ Jay, while a balloon clown walked around shaping balloons into poodles, swords, and rabbits for the attendees.
“We are happy to receive the event organizers’ support, “said Ms. Maria Tree, the leader of volunteer group in Shanghai for HTS, “The money you have just raised will really help the children who have been so sadly affected by the earthquake and help them heal.”
The day ended with lots of laughs and yells, a guitar performance by a sweet Hawaiian girl guitarist and applause by everyone in attendance. But, although this barbeque is over, ShanghaiExpat’s effort to help children has just begun. ShanghaiExpat is proud to hold its “Summer BBQ Benefit Series”, and will move around to different venues every last Sunday of the month for the whole summer. More donations will be greatly welcomed and appreciated, as serving the needs of orphans in Sichuan is a long-term, ongoing drive. So if you want to help, even well past when most people have forgotten, please consider doing so at the ShanghaiExpat Summer BBQ Benefit Series. |

One point that has been made is that after the initial donation flood has subsided and the people of the quake area and the agencies who are helping face a long haul task of rebuilding, support will be need in 6 months as much as it is now. This summer, our whole series of BBQ will help support the on the ground effort of Half the Sky. The specific terms of each BBQ in terms of donations and fundraising may be different depending on where we have them and who we partner with.. we will publish the terms and document use of the donations to see they get to the people who need the help. We will be clear about the donations and what happens to them. We also have some inquiries about other possible projects in Sichuan that need support. More on that later. |

Some background about Half the Sky:
Half the Sky offers the love and concern of family for thousands of orphaned children in China who have lost theirs.
Their goal is to ensure that every one of China's orphans has a caring adult in her life.
They provide individual nurture and stimulation for babies, innovative preschools that encourage an early love of learning, personalized learning opportunities for older children, and loving — and most important, permanent — foster homes for children whose special needs will keep them from being adopted.
Half the Sky's board of directors brings together child development experts and professionals from all walks of life, united in their concern for children who have no families to speak for them.
In welfare institutions across China, in offices in Beijing, Hong Kong and the United States, hundreds of Half the Sky staff members work to make certain that each of China's orphans knows that someone cares. |

Thank you DJ Jay.Soul to bring us the soulful and funky sounds, and Moon River to arrange the kids garden and different activities. Barbecue King also donated one BBQ grill valued at 6888RMB for the lucky draw at the end of June. People who attend the BBQ tomorrow will get double chance to win this great price.

Thanks to all the folks who showed up at the BBQ event and brought a lot of support on this past Sunday. It was a really fun day out for everyone!
We are very happy to announce that we collected RMB13,030 in total from the entrance fee that day. After adding up to the funds that we collected at "HTS Children's Earthquake Mixer" plus a matching amount from ShanghaiExpat, the Total is now RMB42512!
On behalf of ShanghaiExpat and Half the Sky, I thank you all for your contributions. There are many orphanages to be built and supported in light of all that has happened and every bit counts.
Please know that the ShanghaiExpat Summer BBQ Benefit Serials officially starts now, and we will move around to different venues every last-Sunday of the month for the whole summer. More donations will be greatly welcomed and appreciated, and likely needed long after many will have forgotten aboutt this event so if you have long term giving plans, please consider adding this cause.
