Post subject: New Pub: The Irishman's Pub

THE IRISHMAN'S PUB: SOFT OPENING

The Irishman's Pub, located at the back of Thumb Plaza opposite Papa John's Pizza, held its soft opening on Wednesday this week with gallons of free booze served to a very large crowd of keen beer and Guinness drinkers. Design-wise, The Irishman, backed by a group of investors headed by Declan Surlis (ex O'Malleys, Blarney Stone and Vizcaya Club), is a hyrbrid of the Blarney Stone and Dublin Exchange featuring predictable dark wood and red decore, the ubiqutous Guinness and Irish road sign paraphernalia, with clapped out violins yet to come. I have yet to see a menu, but my Nostradamusish nerves sense the prices will be very Blarney Stone-Dublin Exchangesque, i.e. will milk your wallet to the maximum of your hard-earned RMB. However, in the drinkers' desert of Pudong, tightwad tipplers and homesick shamrocks won't give a damn. The Irishman features a fantastic long bar with seating for almost 20. The venue is spacious enough that anyone who suffers claustrophobia in the confined, comfy space of the Blarney, will be wallowing in excess square meterage to warrant a thumb's up. Anyway, despite these less major issues and the boring name, The Irishman's Pub will bring a welcome breath of fresh air to the limited range of yawn-inspiring booze joints in Pudong. Worth visiting, should you be in the area for business, visa applications etc.

I found the place great, yes a little pricey - but wtf, not like people open businesses just for the publics' enjoyment / pleasure.

Now the only thing missing is promotional food & drink deals and a crop of cute girls to keep the place packed.

I was there for lunch recently and had a pint of Kilkenny with it. Tasted just like the beer back home. I've been in Shanghai so long I'd forgotten how good beer can be. Fortunately the heavens opened and I was trapped for the afternoon. Pricey but worth every rmb.

It's in thumb plaza - opposite the new Malones, and just past the carrefour.

Think a pint of Guinness is going for 70rmb. Not sure about other stuff, as well, if you go to an Irish pub you should drink Guinness!

While the beer is priced in the normal (high) range for expat bars, the food prices are in the decidedly crazy even for expats range. 125RMB for fish and chips?!!?!?!?!? That is crack head crazy pricing. I won't be going there again anytime in the near future.

Yes, spendy, but have you had their food? For the most part their food tastes better than most other restaurants in the area. Also, I am from the Northwest in the States and I personally think their fish and chips are in the top 5 i've ever had. We don't go their often for food, but when we do, it is WELL worth it. They have actual steak fries, and the chunks of fish are huge, not oil-logged, and best of all (for me) they have Strongbow, and (for my husband) black and tans (kilkenny and guiness) that taste just like home.

^ Yep, expensive....but worth every penny/yuan. If it wasn't so far away from where I live I'd be there much more often.

Its good to hear the food is good, but I just got back from Oz and it really strikes me now how much expats are slugged for alcohol and food in expat bars. I mean its more to much more expensive that the same quality place in Australia. A pint for 7 - 12 dollars! $60 for fish and chips this is a joke no matter how good it is.

I for one are now starting to really think twice before going to any expat place unless I have to. Especiallywith the recent rise in RMB value.

You've got the beer price right but I think the fish and chips would be, although still expensive, A$22 not A$60.

And what local places serve Guinness for less than 65rmb??? Fine, if you want s****y locally brewed with rice beer go and spend 2rmb in Lawsons, but if you want imported stuff it IS going to cost more than Oz/UK/US...

Guys,It's funny to see all the above comments. Where in Asia can you be served a "Pint" or "drink/ food" from an Irish person?... I dare you to ring an Irish pub anywhere in the world and ask to speak to someone "Irish" (not just English speaking...& not Ireland....oh,i may double dare you on that one!!) Recently I went on a walk about while staying at the Radisson Hotel (by the way a great Hotel!) seen starbucks and ordered a take away coffee (great..english speaking staff). When I went walk about again , I noticed an Irish Pub in the corner of Thumb Plaza "the irishmans Pub" ..ooh the heavens opened! Downed the coffee and ordered a pint of Guinness from a foreigner behind the bar no less.."Irish". I asked if he was real after 2mins of talking "DECLAN" was the man of the house.."IRISH"! Yes expensive, put thats the price you pay for service (from the owner no less!) and a great chat..To be so far away form your homeland he made my trip "home away from home". For the people living in Shanghai (see above) guys, don't B...i..ch about some place that is out of reach of your pocket ( as opposed to quality!!) ..go to "lawsons?" (sounds like a real gem of a place for the price i.e.?) Please send me the address for my next visit and I'll check it out.. The " Irish Lamb Stew" was excellent, almost like Mums, but the next time I go back.. I'll have to try the "fish & chips" as mentioned above!! Keep up the good work "The Irishmans Pub" China...

I think you will have to pay more than 6 Euros for a pint of Guiness at any Irish pub in Europe and many of them don't have happy hours.

The words:

Irishman's Pub
Thumb Plaza
70 rmb Guiness

Automatic deal - breakers

This has to be the worst name for a bar in the history of bars.

They have Schoefferhofer, one of the best German Hefeweizen (RMB55 for a half liter). Saves me a trip to Paulaner every once in a while.

A very naive monkey...

Look how many times Travelman has typed messages on this website. You don't think that maybe he was 'hired' by the Irish guy to write that stuff?

Sorry to be blunt but that's a load of balls! Wink Declan is a top bloke and is working his butt off to make the Irishman a success, the beer prices are on the high end but its not only about the prices, having a good chat with a geniune and nice guy after work...priceless

I suggest take a trip over there and check it out just for the craic...

* Disclaimer i am not affiliated or employed by the Irishman pub, i am not Irish and havent even been to the Emerald isle. Did do danny boy at Karaoke once but that doesnt count.

Edited. sang the song Danny boy not 'do'in a sexual context. Embarassed

Toadyman - I didn't get rich by paying more for goods than their actual worth. 120RMB for fish and chips is stupid and so is anyone willing to pay that for them.
