BBC , I find this a little out of character. If your wife is teaching you Mandarin then I assume she is Chinese ? Or Malaysian ?
Most Chinese girls I know love expensive restaurants.

Oh I see, I stand corrected then, just Shanghainese girls ?

Okay if she is really not into extravagant places I can give you some ideas.
Right, how about you ? Do you like Chinese food ?
Or are we talking a place that serves both eastern and western dishes ?

BBCExpat,

It's great that you want to show appreciation for your wife. I would suggest starting by thinking about what she likes - a night out on the town partying away? an evening with friends and family in a cozy place? My guy took me to a rowdy Halloween parade in San Francisco's Castro district for my birthday two years ago because I have always wanted to go. I had a blast (in spite of the fact that we were almost being shot at) and always thought of that evening with fond memories. Good luck for your planning. And remember, it's that thought that counts!

If my husband wanted to make me feel very very special, I would like him to take me to a quiet romantic restaurant for dinner (Casa 13 is nice and not cheap, but not too expensive, I heard Whisk is really nice and their chocolate deserts can make any woman happy).

Then, I would like him to take me to the movies (to watch one of those "gay" movies he says he hates), and hold my hand the whole time.

Then, maybe a drink or two at a quiet bar (Martini Bar on the Bund might be a good choice)

After that, I would like to spend the night in one of the amazingly romantic rooms of URBN Hotel (never seem a more romantic hotel in my life, anywhere in the world) and get in-room massage (a service they offer)...the rest is too private to share Smile

I recommend Trattoria Isabella
http://www.smartshanghai.com/venue/2193/Trattoria_Isabelle_shanghai

It's just off HuaiHai Lu but very cosy inside- dark wood, candles, nothing fancy just romantic. Food isn't expensive no big markups on the wine, Chinese staff, hide flowers somewhere in apartment and give them to her when you get back home.

I agree on Trattoria Isabella. The food is good, not expensive, decor is romantic and quaint...and yes I agree on giving the flowers too...I would make it a huge bouquet of nice smelling flowers maybe different types of all the same color...

BBCExpat,

Not sure your wife would really enjoy Trattoria Isobella - it's Italian food - includes pizza, pasta and more, which you mentioned she does not like.

You mention she likes a little spicy but not scary like Hunan food.

Why not try Southern Barbarian - its Yunnan food - something quite different.
The decor is quaint and out of the way but not wildly romantic, however there is nothing to stop you hiding a couple of candles in your pocket and picking up a rose or two on the way.

The entrance is on Maoming Lu through the Art Gallery right next door to Di Shui Dong. A bit complicated to find but just keep walking through the gallery until you get to the coffee shop then it's up the stairs on the left.
Very reasonable prices so she can go wild with the menu and not feel extravagant.

Are you joking ? From his name BBCexpat I am guessing he is a Brit. British cooking would be sheer torture for a Chinese girl even if it's cooked with love.....

There's a newly opened cozy and fine dining western restuarant at Lou shan quan lu MRT (line 2), above mc donalds, 6th floor..only 98rmb/person for a 7-course western meal..I've not tried it, but it sure looks decent, nice and romantic. You can choose from a variety of main courses (nice looking steaks from the menu) and I think even lobsters.. Well, the overall presentation looks like it's from a fine dining restaurant, even the servers.. might worth a try! After dinner you can shop at the mall and then surprise her with a diamond ring..what a perfect way to end the night!

He's already married for crying out loud. Just to get some extra special bonus sex you don't need more than KFC and a porn DVD.

Funny, I was going to suggest Trattoria Isabella, too. The food's not fantastic nor is the decor but there's something very romantic about it.

Forget all that stuff man, do something romantic at home. Buy some nice flowers and prepare a meal yourself... Something you know she likes. I assume you know what her favorite food is...

Make the evening all about her, and make it special by doing everything yourself. Hey, anyone can take anyone to a restaurant.

Get little things she likes, like her favorite chocolates or treats, cover you bed with rose petals, anything!

Just make sure it comes from your heart. Do some things like that, then take her out if she wants to go after.

And buy her something nice. Not too expensive, but nice.

Come on man, it's your wife... You should know what she likes! Just do a lot of little things to show her you love her.

That's WAY better than finding an expensive restaurant.

Does she like sweets? My favorite romantic nights end with coffee and dessert. In Shanghai, I like Whisk on Huai Hai Lu, but I know there are other (perhaps more romantic) places.

edited to add that they don't exactly END with coffee and dessert, just the going out part ends that way Wink

Instead of rose petals on the bed, try a plastic sheet covered with baby oil. More fun IMO.

I took my gf to southern barbarian. I liked it but she hated the food...she is cantonese. Not really a romantic place though, lights are too bright and furnishings are sparse and everything is too open.

I've been to Trattoria Isabella twice and received exceptionally bad service both times. Whisk has great deserts but the entrees are nothing special. Southern Barbarian was good not great, that was a strange night because although the restaurant was full, there was not one single chinese person dining there. Really.

Actually I can't think of too many "romantic" Chinese places.
Not places where two of you can squeeze into a booth and hold hands by candlelight. There are western restaurants like this but as the OP mentioned he wants his wife to have a dinner where she enjoys the food (not just someplace where he can get a good feed and she can usually find something on the menu to suit her taste).
There are restaurants with a little atmosphere - like Banana Leaf, Ba Guo Bu Yi, etc where there is a little music or performers. There used to be a nice Thai place in the building opposite Plazza 66 ( might have been Plazza 66 - can't remember) which had quite romantic seating and candles, etc as well as Thai dancing and singing which is refined and elegant. It was on the second or third floor at one end of the floor, if you get the wrong end there is a Japanese restaurant. Anyone have any idea of the name of this place ?
