Post subject: Charging by the Byte to Curb Internet Traffic

Whole article is too long to copy here...

Charging by the Byte to Curb Internet Traffic

By BRIAN STELTER

Some people use the Internet simply to check e-mail and look up phone numbers. Others are online all day, downloading big video and music files.

For years, both kinds of Web surfers have paid the same price for access. But now three of the country’s largest Internet service providers are threatening to clamp down on their most active subscribers by placing monthly limits on their online activity.

One of them, Time Warner Cable, began a trial of “Internet metering” in one Texas city early this month, asking customers to select a monthly plan and pay surcharges when they exceed their bandwidth limit. The idea is that people who use the network more heavily should pay more, the way they do for water, electricity, or, in many cases, cellphone minutes.

That same week, Comcast said that it would expand on a strategy it uses to manage Internet traffic: slowing down the connections of the heaviest users, so-called bandwidth hogs, at peak times.

AT&T also said Thursday that limits on heavy use were inevitable and that it was considering pricing based on data volume. “Based on current trends, total bandwidth in the AT&T network will increase by four times over the next three years,” the company said in a statement.

All three companies say that placing caps on broadband use will ensure fair access for all users.

^ What has this got to do with China?

Many countries have bandwidth caps, so this is really nothing new.

That's an interesting discussion.

I suspect one of the reasons Google was bidding for air band was to dodge that and offer bandwidth for free (and monitoring Internet usage, which is pure gold info for them).

There is one proposition that makes sense: pay per GB but get as much speed as you can. If they would give me as much speed I can handle, I would -probably- agree with paying a bit more.

As for throttling speed in peak times: doesn't really matter because most users using BT keep their boxes seeding for the entire day. I like the "the bandwidth hog today is the average user of tomorrow". Totally appropriate.

Actually Lady Bergie, Mark Cuban, the billionaire that owns the Dallas Mavericks has a very good blog and he talks a lot about the video through the net issue and why it cannot be economically possible. It's a good read if you are interested in this topic (http://www.blogmaverick.com).

Yeah he is good. The comments section is always controversial.

In fact if you post good comments he will email you personally, which is very very surprising.

Suddenly you get a personal mail by mark cuban and start discussing shiat with him.

He and Seth Godin are probably some of the best bloggers I know of. (Bergie, assuming you dont know Seth Godin I think you will really really like his stuff).

Some of his books are pure marketing gold by the way (Permission Marketing, Spreading the Ideavirus, The Gap).

Let me guess, like bell canada, the day after they roll out the caps they'll be rolling out their own video on demand service. Of course, that has nothing to do with the caps. No... Assholes!

Here is a hint: If your service is NOT unlimited, then don't advertise it that way!

Thanks, hc, I've read the Ideavirus book but hadn't seen the blog. I market to one of the smallest needles in the haystack - I need all the help I can get.

Try to find Permission Marketing and also Purple Cow, and perhaps Small is the New Big in your specific case Bergie.

They kind of complement each other. Permission Marketing is more or less what got Seth famous for.

If I understand you correctly Small is the New Big might be a good choice if you need to go super specific.
