I don't think I've ever seen any serious attacks or fights in Shanghai since I arrived. I've heard lots of stories both from people and members posting here. The trouble with stories posted online is the credibility - they could be true, could equally be untrue for all kinds of reasons.

Heard of attacks/fights from people face-to-face and those stories certainly do have credibility.

I would say it's certainly getting worse here though. Rising nationalism and general dislike or even hatred of foreigners. Never been attacked or had a fight here apart from one really short guy who threatened me with a knife on Maoming Lu in the old days. He didn't even threaten me with it as such, just sort of waved it about a bit and kind of gestured towards it - 'Look, I've got a knife'. His friends just stayed in the car looking at us. All I did was cross the road in front of his car. Remember the traffic on that street?

Recently a guy tried to run me over and him and his needle-dick friend gave me the finger as they sped by. I've never had that experience in Shanghai before.

What I wonder is this - during the Olympics there will be a flood of people from all over the world here. Many will go to bars to relax and have a good time. Being tourists they may not be aware of the shitty bars/areas and that may result in several altercations.

Mark my words, it will get a lot worse.

Post subject: Re: Bonbon Goers Beware!

Quote:
A Chinese man is trying to pass through the crowd and there is a banging of shoulders. The man is enraged and starts pushing. The foreigner apologizes and says he doesn't want any trouble but it is too late.

So the Chinese bumped into the foreigner first, not the other way around, but why the foreigner was the one apologizing instead? Were you in the crowd because you must've gotten the story mixed up there! Razz

I am not sure were the foreigner was from, but if from the UK or Australia, it is normal to apolgize when someone bumps into you, and expect the 'bumper' to apologize too. Every other thing I say in a busy bar back home is 'Sorry mate'.

Okay firstly. Bonbon is a **** hole. I went there a lot in the early days but now it really isn't worth going. Firstly the drinks are dodgy - drink more than a few rounds and you will be in trouble. I've seen guys lying unconscious in the street outside and also being carried out. The staff are scam artists and bullies. 3 of them quickly surrounded a friend of mine in a very threatening posture and demanded payment for an alleged broken glass (10 rmb) but they asked for 30 rmb claiming it was THREE broken glasses. When I booked a cubicle for a party, the waiter reminded me I hadn't tipped him yet - 10 minutes after I just arrived and hadn't even received my drinks yet! And then the fights. I haven't seen many fights in Shanghai but I HAVE seen 2 guys covered in blood in the lobby which was very scary. No idea how it happened and they were both Chinese.

I must admit I don't go there much any more, the first few times it's fun, but it is kind of like being in a bouncy castle full of 3 year old kids that smells of smoke and puke.

Agreed. But I'm confused about their intentions. Do you think their intention is to contain China's peaceful rise? Or perhaps they are aiming to disrupt its harmonious society?

Dont make the mistake and think this is somthing that just happens to foreigners. They do it to each other as well.

The other day I was drunk playing basket ball. There was some cat that didn't like a call or something so 5+ guys knock him down and whail on him. I wanted to help the guy get away but I knew better.

Once at Careforre (sp) I witnessed a customer yelling a clerk and because the clerk ask him not run over people with a cart. The customer swung at the clerk and then threw his own cart over and tried destroying things in the store. He had to be dragged out.

I have taught martial arts for year and there is one thing I can tell you.

RUN

And if you have a problem tell the embassy. I have done it. If we all do it things will change.

One person got attacked at Carrefore months back and the Consulate issued a warning.

The Chinese can be some of the most volatile 'no questions asked, lets just fck him up' people in the world.....

There are two of those disgusting shiit-hole ktv's near my place. Fights ALL the time. Guys staggering out covered in blood. Taxi drivers having the shiit kicked out of them by about 20 guys. Seen it.

Chinese people + alcohol = bad situation.

I second Chico.....I have also done some mma but the true fact of the matter is you should turn around and run. If it gets to heavy and your in it already with a strong chance of getting beat down fire a few shots at the first guy...but hit him hard...I mean hard which will stun them and run run run!

Bottles can mess you up, 10 guys can mess you up, Knife can mess you up, a sore ego hurts for 5 minutes.

Quoting a friend of mine. He is from Ireland and I had to decrypt his actual words in to this.

"The first thing I am going to do when I get back home is find a Chinese guy and f*** him up. I am tired of having to worry about every person I come across. And if the guy yells that he is not Chinese. I don't care."

I once had a Chinese girl tell me the violence towards foreigners is a revenge medal of honor for oppression 80 years ago.

What ever the reason is, it is piss poor.

The English.

The Japanese.

The Americans for saving their arses against the Japanese.

Everybody because of the torch relay.

The French.

They will always have a reason to whine....
