Aren't 70% of the restaurants in Shanghai nowadays have the smoking/non-smoking sections? Went to this cantonese cuisine in Infinity mall on Huai Hai lu and also Chamate 一茶一坐 in Xin Tian Di, they both got non-smoking section.

RU Cafe on Xinzha Lu in Jing'an area is completely non-smoking (between Xikang Lu and Changde Lu, opposite One Park Ave). The place has a healthy offering of food and drinks (fresh juices & smoothies), as well as fresh bread from their onsite bakery. Great place to grab a bite for fair price.

hmmm, maybe 70% of the places you go. most restaurants, do not, and some, even if they DO have demarkations, are reluctant to enforce it. Sad

But it is improving. Smile

Post subject: smoke free restaurant

As an occasional visitr to Shanghai - about 4 times a year - I can recommend The Secret Garden at 333 Changle Lu. Not only does it have a smoke free section, the ambience is lovely, the service is first rate, the food is wonderful, and the value is excellent.

I'm immensely pleased to find out that Ajisen has recently turned non-smoking, completely, on all its outlets. I think there is hope for the day to come when China implements an outright ban on smoking in all restaurants Evil or Very Mad

Not a chance when I've seen a doctor smoking a cigarette in his heavily stained overcoat right under a no smoking sign in his examination room. Laughing

Seriously, I doubt the gov't will impose any ban if its going to upset the mass. I think there were some mass prοtest here in China when the gov't tried to limit the sales of cigarettes some time around the turn of the century. At least I think I read that somewhere.

Despite agreeinging with this comment in principle, previous expereince in watching other massively smoking countries go towards the no smoking direction based on health concerns and costs indicate that China will eventually go this route and will be quite successful at it.

I agree, if China wants to ban it, it can - it will sell the ban on the basis of the "greater good", impact on health services, strength of the Motherland, foreign image etc. Chinese people will then come together and stop smoking in public. Public smokers will then probably run the risk of being ostracised within the community (i.e. losing face).

If the party boys end the smoking party, do you really believe people will object en masse based on something you think you read somewhere? If smoking bans can be enforced in a culture like Miami, they can be enforced in other countries. In any case, even here, how many people actually eat in their doctor's examination rooms?

Well, I understand the frustation of dining out when you are seated next to chain smoker... definetely ruin the whole dining experience.
Most western restaurant in Shanghai however divide their area into smoking and non-smoking area, just like mine, Sydney Restaurant. The good news for all pro-non-smoking and family: Our Saturday and Sunday brunches are SMOKE FREE!

Good on ya mate, didn't lose me. Two ticks.

China has the most smokers in the world, but are way behind other countries in realizing that second hand smoke actually kills.
Hopefully, they will catch up soon, and save a few (many), innocent lives.

All the restaurants in Shanghai Centre alongside the Portman Hotel are non smoking inside with a few smoking tables outside.
