I've had quite a few accidents in taxis here. One very serious one and several bumps. |

Was leaving a building when it started to pour down. I didn't have an umbrella and was trying to hail a taxi. I stepped off the sidewalk and felt someone touch me. A woman with her umbrella open stood next to me and told me to stand under her umbrella. She managed to hail a taxi and walked me to it, still under her umbrella. I was most surprised, and very grateful. I always thought the ads that are shown on tv about being kind and polite are just for show, but there are actually some nice people out there. |

^ True. But I think the percentage of nice people here is higher -- especially when you get out of Shanghai. |

Getting back on topic... I have an experience to relate which was both unusual & typical:
* I was asked to speak at a local Party celebration..that was unusual for me.
* the night before the Party party, after I had already composed my talk, my speech was delivered to me by courier in both Mandarin & English ... rather unusual for me, but possibly typical here |

^ i'd love to get a transcript of that speech...
It must be very Chinese, right ?
Some time ago i was asked to have a speech on a congress. Had to submit it one week before the start of the 2 day congress.
They were very happy with it and changed the whole congress program to highlight my speech.
One week later, five minutes before i started my speech, they asked me to try to speech 45 minutes instead of my scheduled 20 minutes. So i did, extemporizing and adding all kinds of stories to my speech.
The >200 people audience enjoyed it.
After more than one hour, the organisation discreetly shove a terribly small note on my lectern, asking me to stick an end on it.
Later that day, they made such an extremely wiiiiiide, very Chinese photo with >200 people on it. More than 20 minutes to get everybody (sitting, standing,..) on the right place. |

Well, despite all the sarcasm in this thread so far, I actually witnessed this two days ago:
I saw an old lady use some newspaper to pick up the mess that her poodle had left on the pavement. |

When I asked for the blue shirt, she actually gave me a blue shirt!!!
One time I was in a restaurant reading a news paper, the waiter came to my table, moved the news paper that i was still reading....to set the drink i ordered in the correct spot. Wtf
went to get a hair cut, girl asks me if i wanted a drink, i replied no. then she said, well if i don't get you the drink we will get fined. Well ****,, why did you ask me then??
Ohh...get this, one time i asked for a bowl of rice, freaking took 15 min. but thats not the part that pisses me off. Its the fact that theres like 5 waiters standing there doing nothing. Apparently theres like this system where they only carry the food from the person that brings it out to your table, they can't fetch it cuz its not there job.
I would like a size L.........heres a size M, you'll fit. Noo...i would like a L.......Medium looks good on you.... but its too small..........its a good color!..........The freaking color isn't gonna help me fit into the damn thing lady!!!
Its incredible! She doesn't have a L, but shes still gonna try to sell me the Medium.
I love china........I really do. Each country has its drawbacks. don't get me started on US.
okay maybe a couple..
Why can't US just include the damn tax INTO the item and make it a perfect even number!!!...if its marked 200, i would like to pay 200.....not 199 plus tax.
Spend 3 night in the hospital w/o insurance, spend 3 years paying it off.
Last call at 2am in California, thats like...when the party STARTS!!
Waiting in a line for 2 hours to get into a club. .......thats empty inside.
does it just to look like it popping to attract more people.
Tips!! I understand certain places should have tips, but others I really question it. like....
valet, why the F do i need to tip you if your sole job is just to park the damn car, you get paid to park my car, why should I pay you more?? The garbage man does his job, how come he doesn't get tips??
To make a conclusion, I think service industry would be a lot better in china if there were such thing as tips. |
