| Post subject: Should I bring my Klipsch speakers? Can I get them there? |
Hey there. I got these awesome ProMedia 2.0 PC speakers and I really want to bring them to Shanghai. Problem is they are 120watts. And I dont want the hum from a converter. Can you buy high quality speakers and such there? We're only talking like $100 for these new in the States but they are really a great deal. I'd be sad to hear comparable things are like 3 to 4 times the price in Shanghai. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. |

Many of the international brands are available here (including Klipsch, Jamo, etc), and almost all of them are made here in China (there are a few factories down in Guangdong that make most of the mid-market speakers in the world). They are generally exported to the US or Europe and then reimported, so there is a lot of transportation costs, plus the Chinese import duties, plus the VAT. The end result is that they are a lot more expensive than in the West. If your company is paying to ship your speakers, I'd go ahead and ship them on over. |

If you don't mind risking the converter failing thus screwing up your speakers then bring them. Speakers can reach up to double the original price.
I have heard about the "export then import back" concept, but I find it very moronic and am starting to think it is just a myth that China spreads to justify their doubling the price you can get a product in other parts of the world. |

its not about doubling up their prices in the rest of the world... that would harm their sales. its to justfy the high prices on the local markets..catering to the new-rich, who want things to be expensive. its the same with furnitures and other products as well. as long as shipping the containers is cheap... this trend will continue |

If you have spare space in your luggage, why not. You're probably going to end up buying a 240V to 120V transformer unit here anyways, if you plan on bringing a bunch of electronics over.
If you're already low on luggage space, forget them. |

Yup...catering to the rich. That is the simpleminded way. If priced reasonably they'd actually be making more money because the average schmoe might then find it tempting to scrimp and save to splurge sometimes. Sigh....another reason why the class levels are still so wide.
I don't recommend you bring TOO many electronics over though. If you want to bring your speakers and receiver should the company be footing that shipping bill, then sure. And a laptop. But anything else....well it ought to be something near non-existant in Shanghai....like a Slingbox |

Leave the speakers home. You can get a pair of new Swan M-200's for a little over a hundred $$. Made here by Hi-Val, do a little googling. |
