People's Square to Longyang rd 20-25 minutes. Cost rmb 4. Walk from subway platform to Maglev ticket counter and buy ticket about 10 minutes. Wait for Maglev can take up to 20 minutes and then 8 minute ride to Pudong airport. Then 10 - 15 minute walk from Maglev Platform to terminal check in counter. Maglev costs rmb 50 or with same day ticket shown at time of purchase rmb 40. If you have a jiaotong card (subway card) you can use it for subway and Maglev and save time by not having to wait to purchase ticket at Maglev and it uses the rmb 40 discounted rate. So total cost rmb 44-54 and a little over 1 hour total time.

Taxi will cost you about rmb 150 and figure about 1 hour depending on traffic.

Bus from Jing An temple is like rmb 12 so is another and about cheapest option.

Want to be really cheap, see if there is an International Exposition running the day you want to go and pick up the hotel to airport shuttle at one of the major hotels or at the exhibition center.

Many downtown hotels also have bus to airport but will cost more than Jing An temple bus.

My preference is usually Subway and Maglev because they do not have to deal with traffic. Other people only take taxi. During Olympics I take a taxi because of my many bags that get searched at subway and Maglev which wastes a little additional time. Each to his/her own.

Definitely the maglev/subway over the taxi. It is so fast and the taxi can take forever. The maglev runs ever 15 to 20 mins and takes about 7 mins from the station to the airport.

This are my experience:-

1. Taking subway/maglev is only significantly cheaper if there is only one passenger. You will still save when you have two person travelling but not much.

2. Negotiating with the subway stairs, crowds and walking can be daunting if you have large luggage bags. No one will let you go first or help you with the stairs!

3. As per Renovator's detail post on time, it takes much much MUCH more than the actual few minutes train/subway ride with the changes, tickets and waiting.

4. Although traffic can be unpredictable, if your flight is at non rush hours, chance of a taxi from your door to airport would be much much faster, more convenient & comfortable.

5. All in all, tried the subway/maglev - not worth my time - will never do it again unless I have no/minimal luggage, travelling by myself and happened to be close to a Line 2 station.

Can we carry a suit case (samsonite), the ones that are about 50cm high, 70cm wide and 40cm deep on the metro to/from Longyan to Peoples Square station and on the maglev to the airport?

Yes, but be very aggressive. Don't be afraid to shove and push. Unlearn the Western niceities about public transport.

Also bear in mind anon6969 - it stops for some ridiculous reason at 9. Are they afraid of the dark ? Make a plan B & plan C.

Regular airport buses don't run so late. The fare is RMB19 to Jing An and the fares are different depending on destination.

Taxis go to Jing An during the day is RMB150 to Jing An and RMB160 to Zhong Shan Park. It would cost about 25% more after 11pm. I remember paying RMB205 or so to Zhong Shan Park.

Yes I carry 3 that size (2 tied together) plus my carry on luggage every 3 weeks or so on the subway and then onto maglev and airport. It can be a bit of a pain from time to time but can be done. During Olympics, however, I am using taxi because last time I did this they searched all my bags in Subway, Maglev and airport which was kind of a nuissance, but with just 1 large bag I would use that system now as well.

What do you call "so late" ? I've taken the bus from Poodung to the train station way after ten p.m., seems to me once or twice quite a bit after eleven.

I think it's all a matter of how many people and how much luggage you have. By myself with lots of time, bus is best. (Figure over an hour, best an hour and a half.) If I'm late (usually) subway and maglev. If there's two or more of us and a ton of baggage, taxi.

Don't bother with taxi to longyang tho. It's almost the same price as going all the way to Poodung.

I sure as hell hope they don't build another extension to Poodung. Hongqiao was way better than the first shithole, the first one was better than the latest piece of crap, I'm afraid to see what they could come up with for a Poodung III. We'd probably be walking from Jia Ding.
