| Post subject: need career advise... |
First off, thanks for having this great site! I’ve browsed through many pages and found a lot of useful info! I need some advise, hoping that you guys could give me some tips! Everyone's situation is different, so here's mine:
I’m 28, American born Chinese; speak fluent English and Mandarin (I can read very well and type some as well); I'm also quite fluent in Cantonese, and also knowledgeable in beginners Korean. I have 5+ years of hospitality experience, focuses on event planning and execution. I came to SH for a fresh start, and I’ve been here for a little over 2 weeks already but no promising job prospects. I’ve already had some contacts with headhunters already but they all told me that it would be hard for me to find a job and that I would pretty much end up doing admin work. I worked from the bottom up in the hospitality industry and have already paid my fair share of dues of being an admin; furthermore, I have a bachelors in marketing and my most recent job was as a manager in events at a fairly large hotel property in LA; needless to say, I am looking for something more. Is it wishful thinking for me to look for a decent paying job (say maybe 15000-20000RMB/mth) in event planning? I don’t have to work for hotels again but would like to (since that’s where my experience is in) but I’m also open to any other industry with a job focus in event planning. As much as I would like to do sales/business development, I am not that type of person; I’ve done catering sales before and hated the “sales” aspect of it. I’ve applied at some hotels but have not received any responses, am I asking for too much or is it because I’m an American citizen and they don’t want to sponsor me to work there? How should I go about looking for a decent job? What channels should I go through?
Thank you all in advance for any recommendations that you may have! |

You should go back to the US and work for a company who has an office/branch in Shanghai. Then, ask the company to send you to China as an expat. It might be easier for you. And, the package will be nicer for sure. |
