| Post subject: where to buy iphone v1 8GB, and how much? |
Im planning on buying an iphone, 1st generation 8GB. Ive been reading alittle here on the forum, but most threads with price information are quite old. Does anyone have any recent price information?
And any good suggestions where to buy it? |

4200. Seems kinda steep. The threads that dates half a year ago lists the same price. Shouldnt the price have gone down by now? I mean, it is the 1st generation, not the 2nd generation Im talking about.
Or am I missing something? |

Yes, you are missing something.
After the 3G got released the price of the first-gen iPhone in China went up, as the supplies are dwindling and the new version is hard to find. Plus, in China there is not really a point to buy the 3G iPhone, since we are stuck with Edge anyway.
In my opinion, the only advantage of the new version is the headphone jack, which is no longer recessed (i.e. all headphones are now compatible).
4200 RMB sounds right to me for a first gen iPhone. Prices will go down eventually, but it is becoming harder to find a phone in mint condition. |

Hi Tayran1, I bought my first-gen Iphone about 3 weeks ago for 3800 RMB. The condition was very good but it was not a mint condition. Caezar was right about the supplies part and I have to say I prefer first gen to the 3G. I also bought a 16G model at the same time for 5200 RMB. That should give you an indication for the price anyway. I bought it in Wai Hai Rd computer centre. |

Ok, thanks for the advice. Ill give it a try!
Regarding the "not mint condition." Doest that mean that the phone is already used by someone else for some time, or just that the box has been opened?
Any advice what to watch out for / check when Im buying the phone? |

Ummm yep your spot on in-regards to the "not mint condition". Usually it is second hands and they just buff it up a bit but most of the time it is pretty good. You got to understand supply and demand here is pretty tough so if you can get your hands on them then you are pretty lucky. What to look for, where do I start, I had to return my first 8G iphone because it won't vibrate when people rings me and they knew it was faulty and yet they still sold it to me anyway hoping that I didn't know (Chinese you either love them or hate them), scratches on the front and back of the phone especially the back. The same shop that sold me the phone before tried to sell me a 16G Iphone but upon closer inspection the silver paint at the back has peeled off or scratched off. Ofcause the Vibrate function should work, put your sim in it to make sure the phone can make calls, and general blemishes, also make sure it is a real Iphone and not a KNOCK OFF. Happy hunting. |

How do I tell if its a real one? Or rather, any obvious tells that it is a knock off. |

Well the physical is different, the fake one is a little bit thinker, and the phone operation is of different class. Essentially you just need to have a look on the internet on what the iphone looks like, and some of the screen functions and you should be right. Make sure when you buy the phone get them to help port your sim phonecontact to your iphone before you leave the store unless you know Iphone applications very well then you can do it your self. If not, get them to do it. If you need more details you can call me on [moderator: send pm. don't recommend you post your mobile here] =) Cheers |

I saw a fake one at the SHTM market a month ago that was 100% identical in appearance. in fact it looked to have the same casing. The sales guy knew I had a real one and was keen to see how his measured up.
It was much lighter though, and the software was obviously different, but it had some of it's own strenghts!
dual sim card slot
multi touch screen
real 8gb capacity (I checked on his laptop and could see 100+mp3's on there)
multi format media player
Not bad for a fake.... |

Oh, this is bad. I havnt really played around with the iphone software that much. How obviously different is it?
Could I use the serial numbers on the phone, box and in the software to verify if the phone is real or not?
@aristonb: Thanks! I might take you up on that |

Go to the apple website and view some of the iphone videos, that should give you a feel for the software - it should be very smooth and the screen should be very responsive. Most sellers though tell you which are fake, but obviously you don't want to count on that!
Go to several vendors too, I'm sure you'll very quickly pick up how to tell the difference.
Also, pop by an apple store, like the ones in carrefour or inside bestbuy, and play with the ipod touch. you'll get a good feel of the build quality, touch screen and software. |

Yep, I agree with izzy the fake is pretty good, but you can tell when you boot the phone up and see the different. The screen resolutions is pertty poor and the serial number!!! That is a laughing matter. The phone and the box do not match because these phone are shared between shops so the box will not match the phone unless you are very picky then you can find one that does. Also I forgot to tell you, make sure the headphone that comes with the phone works, eg it is able to be use as a handsfree so try to make a call to your friend making sure they can hear you. I got a dude but my 16G works like a charm. One more thing the box content should have the wall charger in it. I had to go back because they didn't give me one for my 16G. I went though hell buying my Iphone I just want to inform future buyers to becareful. |

*too late to reply, sorry. Caught with things. iPhone V1 still do good to me. Although system crashed twice, I still managed to get it done and re-install my all the applications that I like.
yah...RMB4200 is the price that they'll tell you. OF COURSE, you can bargain until 4000RMB and if you're good enough...even lower than 4000RMB.
be careful when buying things in China...not only iPhone...but other stuffs too. Make sure you know the things included in the package and other info. It's best to know quite well about the stuffs so you won't get cheated.
iPhone....iPhone...iPhone~ |
