| Post subject: Can somebody explain this to me... |
Ok so something that has happened a few times since being in china happened again yesterday - the only difference being it was in my office building...
I went to go to the toilet and there was a woman sitting there peeing in one of the cubicles with the door completely open - I went to walk into that one without realising she was there and almost fell over when I saw her! (as I said I have seen this behaviour in some dodgy toilets around china, but not in the office...)
WHY? I asked the chinese girl next to me in the office and she said either convenience or she didn't want to touch the dirty door - well the second one is out because once she finished she didnt wash her hands... I am not trying to bash china here am just curious why anybody would be ok with peeing with the door open in public? Any answers on this strange behaivour? |

Was she hot?
I've never got an answer to these types of questions beyond "This is China", so good luck with getting an answer.
You could upgrade the quality of toilet facilities that you frequent. |

hahahahah! in one of our offices, the hallway to the showroom where we brought customers passed the men's toilet. no matter what memos were sent, the men refused to close the door so if one happened to be bringing clients to the showroom when a man was in the toilet, they got a full view. i finally had to have the door changed to one of those weighted ones that close on their own. problem solved. |

If you have seen some of the "toilet" faclilites that some locals grew up with, and their living conditions, you may realise that its just that they are used to a different level of lack of privacy and do not see it as an issue. I remember working ona job site with construction crews, and I used the same trenches as the crews did... learned real quick why they bring smokes and a newspaper in to take care of business too..as the facilities were one long trench with foot prints on the sides. sigh. |

Oh we have the full view of the men peeing as well - I am kind of used to that because it has been that way the whole time I have been here...
I understand in many places around china they do their business in front of the world, but I was very shocked being a nice office in the middle of shanghai and getting a full view of peeing action Oh you have to love the toilet antics in this country... |

the toilets that are in countryside are a little open-plan, in that they have 3 side walls, with the entrance open, the toilet-seats are at an angle and are wooden structures, with a pit that is sometimes filled with water. these are extremely common in the villages and what-not in Zhejiang province especially in mountainous regions.
several weekends ago, i was busting for a number 2... so had to to find some place in a mountain range i was driving in alone. luckily for me, i was in a very deserted area, and a very windy mountain road, and while driving and scooping out some possible sites in bamboo forests, to dig a hole to do my business, i happened along one of these wooden toilet structures -thankfully.
stopped the car, listened intently for any sounds of people in fields, or approaching vehicles/bicycles -armed with tissues in hand walked over to the aforementioned toilet facilities and availed myself of the same. this particular one had a type of water filled sluice.
basic, but for a basic human need, performed admirably.
now when it comes to habits, i have and continue to witness far too much lack of basic sanitation. i work in a hospital, a medium sized Chinese one, i have seen children urinating and defecating on the floors of the hospital and sometimes a child lifted to urinate into a rubbish-bin, witnessed people vomiting on the floors then make no effort to find a cleaner -just walk away. spitting and smoking in the hospital are common place, and no one dear challenge these behaviours (with me being the exception and the other odd visiting laowai)
just last week i was on the escalator at RT Mart moving from the 2nd to 1st floor, and at the bottom of the escalator was a young boy (approximately 2 years of age) being assisted by an adult male to urinate on the floor, legs spread wide in full view of everyone. not one person said a word... i was too far away and be the time the escalator had got my trundler of goods and i to the 1st floor they had walked off.
this was right by the fruit, vege, meat section no less.
seriously i have worked in far less developed countries where people have much better sanitation habits with far less... if China wants to be taken seriously on the world stage -clean up the act!
no pun intended and i don't refer to just basic sanitation habits... |

Still the most amazing thing I have ever seen in China, perhaps in my lifetime, was a well dressed man in a public restroom, after finding the toilets were all occupied, blow a big load of diarrhea in to a urinal. And (as I posted here once) I saw a grandmother allow her little grandsonson to urinate on the floor of a crowded public bus. It just ain't a big deal here to do your bodily functions in public. Surprised they don't screw in public too! |

The thing that really really gripes me is going to the office toilet, only to find it full of smoke as some little pleb is sitting on the shiiiter and smoking away at the same time.. I find it difficult to think of something more repulsive. |

Not anybody. Many Chinese locals hate that behavior, either.
I feel this behavior is caused by poor toilet facilities before. So someone has had that habit when they were young.
Anyway, this is a bad behavior. Really need to change. |

Since this is turning into the foreigner's favorite topic, no matter where one travels (potty humor) I might well relate an anecdote or two...
I found a hilarious brand new, tiled bathroom at the long distance bus station in Xichang (where the Chinese space program is based in southern Sichuan)... a relatively new bathroom that was nonetheless simply a long room with a trench running from one end to the other (about 12 metres) and little dividers in between (no doors, you see everything walking by) so that the guys won't have to look either in the eye as they're taking a crap. And I've seen (used) truly foul road-stop bathrooms throughout the country... heh.
My third day living in Jinan last year, I walking around outside Shanda and I practically bumped into a woman holding her baby up while the kid took a **** in the middle of the sidewalk. But let's not be too hard on Chinese people though, I was out drinking with my Korean roommate last year and he turns to me and says, "let's go outside and take a piss" I thought whatever, it's night... and in the bushes, nothing really that sketchy there. But no, he walks out onto the sidewalk (this is on a university campus, with girls walking by) and whips it out and goes to town right then and there. Screaming ensued.
P.S. love the comment of the people not wanting to touch the dirty doors... chances they used soap afterwards... slim to none. Two things you must always carry with you (though I'm finding Shanghai is not as bad for this): hand sanitizer and TP. |

I was surprised to find tokyo and kyoto have, like shanghai, more than a few public men's wizz-walls where anyone on the street walking past can see the back of the wizzer while he's in progress. |

Not surprising at all. Ever seen the men's room in the ground level of Narita in the terminal used by Northwest?? |

Many of the toddlers are raised by their grandparent/s in the countryside, and there, life is COMPLETELY different to what city dwellers experience. The kids then come to the city and have already developed habits that are different to the average city kid. |
