Post subject: The Truth We All Need to Know About

I am just off the boat, here 5 weeks and just moved into my place. There are a few things I need to know about that are probably notyour usual questions. If anybody can answer would appreciate it.

1. My chinese friends tell me that I should be careful when I go for a hair cut as some hairdressers pose as a bothel, is this true? If so how the hell do you know the difference?

2. I am not much of drinker, wat are the locals views on smoking weed? Maybe a silly question

3. I lived in Thailand for many years, have bad back pain and used to get a massage on a regular basis. This is also a point of laughter for my chinese friends. Is it possible to get a genuine massage without the happy ending? If so how can I tell the difference?

Hope that somebody out there knows te word on the street

Finally! Someone who can ask refreshing questions for a change!

1. Yes, some "salons" are hooker stockades, but not the majority. Do not worry, if you need help finding a place to get your haircut, PM me. I have been going to the same guy for 5 years and he is so good, I used to fly from Beijing to Shanghai and straight back just to get my haircut.

You will know a place is a front for hookers quite easily - the girls will usually be yelling out to you or trying to grab onto you when you walk by, or when you walk in, you will just 'know.' You do know what a prostitute looks like, don't you?

2. This is highly HIGHLY illegal in China, so don't being rolling in front of your local neighbors or firing up a blunt either in public, no matter how cool you think the place you are at is. Smoke at home, your friends, etc. Again, PM me.

3. See answer to #1 above. You will know. If you lived in Thailand, YOU KNOW. Hookers have that 'special look', that certain little sparkle in their eye.. you know...

Dunno about (1) and (2),

On (3), most of the places should be genuine. Walk around the street, you will see one almost every block. It's my third week in Shanghai and I've been having foot massage or Chinese body massage every other day. It's cheap and good.

Funny questions...
You will draw probably some acid or worse remarks on yourself with this post, but, hell, it is saturday evening, my weekly good deed:
I am assume you are guy.

1) to have a decent haircut, walk into either the smallest hairdresser with the door open, whcih caters to chinese. haircut would not be over 15 rmb.
Or at the opposite, go into a salon like golden times
The "haircut-nail work- cum happy ending" happens usually behind blurred windows with a slightly neon pink light above (although I have heard that the sauna in the Shanghai hotel is also of this kind.)

2) You are in China. some stuff is better not discussed. Shanghai is a very big international city, and as such, many things are similar and/or available like other big cities... But the law is the law, like everywhere. You play with it, you have to face it...

3) Massage: several places have legit massages, there is thread about this. I know only of one place called Dragonfly, but there are many others.
For a real "medical" chinese massage , like you can find in Thailand with the herbs, I dont know well, but I know a place in Zhangyang Road, almost at the crossroad with Century Avenue, using blind masseurs, like we have also in Taiwan.
Happy ending after massage always happens in saunas and similar places as mentionned in para 1.
So avoid blurred windows, pink neon lights, and TongrenLu.. wink2 wink2

1. Their entrance+window is made of 'frozen glass' or at least parts of it
2. -
3a. avoid places under # 1 and enter all the others called 'massage'
3b. Under 50 rmb no happy endings, except in Hankou district
But:
4. If you change your mind and look for the real stuff, pm me

They do have a light...usually pink , not red
and in tongrenlu , a bar street, you will surely meet many young ladies, asking you for a drink, and telling you: Massageeee?? massageee?

Tongrenlu was a joke, sorry..well, a half-joke

Seriously, for a real strong "medical" chinese massage, try blind masseurs.
I just know one place in Pudong, like I said, in Zhangyang Road, on the right side, when you walk towards babaiban, just before the huge crossroad.
It is not a funny place, looks more like a chinese old hospital...

Thanks Again for the massage posts

So to sum up - dodgy hairdressers have frozen glass - possibly with a pink light and lots of ladies trying to grab you in
Avoid places that actually say massage

However like I asked before isnt there an actual area, a red light district like in Thailand for this kind of thing or is it all like Tongrenlu - go out for a night out and never know what your getting?

Discretion. A lot of discretion.

Haven't heard of anybody getting caught that was not immediately deported.

dontknow dontknow Are you looking for.... or are looking to avoid the places? better be direct.
Well if you expect someplace like nana Plaza or sukhumvit (gosh, I jump back almost 25 years ago...!!), you are doomed, no such thing in Shanghai.
But pink neon-frosted windows are ubiquitous, mainly more present in the old french concession (Fuxin Road?) (by theway, in 1930, all the vice in shanghai was mostly in the french concession, because lax law enforcement)
Other places where you will lose your soul, and your wallet content are saunas...They are also all over town, even in Shanghai hotel...
Nobody will go out for a night and end up there without truly looking for it...

Look for scizzors and combs, hard to find at times.

2. I am not much of drinker, wat are the locals views on smoking weed? Maybe a silly question

They don't need to smoke anything, they are already royally fucked up by themselves.

There are good massage places around, you can't see the difference. Trial and error is the way.

Why? Because he can afford it and you're still struggling to find 100 RMB per hour middle school gigs?

1) Avoid anywhere with pink neon lights, covered windows, or women in short skirts. Most legit barbershops will be a sausage fest of hairdressers.

2) Smoke with expats. (we *all* really should get together for a good smoke sometime)

3) Just don't pay for the happy ending. They won't do it for free.

The OP's wife will get angry, if all the bad expats here teach too much naughty stuff to her husband...

One word: Sanlitun.

If that doesn't ring a bell, ask your mother to read the newspapers to you before bed instead of the fairy tales.

this thread is going downhill fast...then again based on the title the OP picked. I suppose it was inevitable to attract these answers...

The logic some people lack is sometimes amazing.

In China, where people have been known to be deported for riding an unlicenses electric scooter, for talking about sexual exploits with Chinese girls, for shouting Free Wherever or for simply having an STD, I would think that even the adolescent intellectually challenged would realize that getting caught smoking pot is a sure ticket home.
