Post subject: Simply NOT Thai iced milk tea

I really don't get it. So a lot of Thai places in Shanghai that I know of don't have Thai iced milk tea. I haven't had Thai for quite awhile here in Shanghai. So I went to Simply Thai the other day. Asked for THAI iced milk tea. I would have thought that after so long they'd have it now....after being such a commonly frequented Thai restaurant. But all I got was regular milk tea. It wasn't orangy colored and it wasn't even a tad extra sweet the way it should be. It was just milk tea.

Anyone know where to get Thai iced milk tea? The vaunted Simply Thai is less than simply Thai.

Thai House probably have it- they've got Lemongrass Juice and all kinds of assorted weird drinks.

Damn... who knows. Sometimes the restaurants in f-cking Thailand don't even serve Thai ice tea-- although it's in every 7/11 there.

Where can I get a good, authentic, Vietnamese coffee? You know, the ones in a tall glass with a load of condensed milk at the bottom?

I buy my Thai iced tea powder from sales@patsongroup.com. Their tea bag is not that great but the tea powder is wonderful. I made the tea with whole milk or ream with lot of sugar. It came out so great. It was heaven to me. The manufacturer also made premium Thai iced tea with no orange color added. It taste the same but I think without the orange color, it is just not Thai iced tea...

I love the tea aroma.

Is there a Thai specialty shop or a Thai mama network I could look into? I want to buy fresh herbs and lemongrass at a reasonable price as I use a lot for my Thai cooking. Also coconut cream and milk.
BTW, I think simply Thai ain't that authentic.

There is no Thai grocery here. However, I think Thai House should have it for you since they serve thai tea(not milk and ice added) when I requested for a glass of hot tea. The owner of Thai House is Thai too so you can find a lot of things that you cannot find in other Thai restaurants. I also go there to buy some Thai fresh herbs there.

I'm Thai here. I also can say not really a Thai mama network here too. We just have a group of 2-3 friends that we can go out sometimes. I hv Thai basil and sweet basil planted at my balcony here.

Although Thai House may have Char Yen 9Thai Iced Tea), they no longer have Thai Chefs....Owner screwed up the Visa's during the olympics.

My wife...who is Thai....and all her friends now frequest Chang Mai Thai restaurant. For Char Yen and "real" Thai Food.

Kangding Lu north of Jing An Temple.

abple...there is a huge network of Thai women here. My wife seems to be the "chief networking officer" for them. Pm me and I will put you in touch.

currychook. Simply Thai....no matter what "That's" says....is not Thai.
Concur. Try Chang Mai...but tell them you want "real Thai". I assume you are not Thai? And if you are not and do not ask...you get the spiced down version.

Lemongrass and coconut milk we usually get at Portman City.

If you cannot find it there....let me know. The back pantry is full of the stuff!

Yup, I have never found Simply Thai to be Thai nuff. Sorta like the Thai version of the Taiwanese restaurant Bellagio. A MAJOR discount from the real thing.

I guess I'll keep looking for the right tea. Razz

Thai Basil? Sweet basil? wow! How did you plant the stuff?
As far as i can tell, there is only one brand of coconut milk available in Shanghai, and i am disappointed with the stuff- it's more like diluted milk with thickener.
Also looking for the small aubergines you put with green curry.
Thanks. I will look into what Thai house offers.

At Simply Thai you have to ask for the sugar syrup that goes with it or it tastes like plain milk tea. It is actually pretty good if you have the syrup... imo

cheers

Currychook, I just brought them from Thailand and plant them here this year. Don't know how to survive this winter, though. For the coconut milk, I know what you mean, I don't like it either. However, I have found there is one original Thai brand imported from Thialnd at Fresh market in Jiu Guang. The brand name is "Chao Koh". The taste mus be a lot better than the one that you found it. BTW, Pines Supermarket also carries Thai fresh herbs too. I also usually check with them when I really want something to cook Thai food and have no time to go to Thai House.

City Shop in Lujiazui usually has those pea sized aubergines. Probably available at their other locations as well.

Thanks for the tip. I was just at Fresh Market and forgot to look for the coconut millk! I tried planting fresh lemongrass in a pot of water but they just started to rot instead of growing roots. Is there something I'm doing wrong? (I do not have green fingers)

Grow them in a glass of water with a bit of fertilizer first...

Take a stalk....couple of toothpicks into the sides to suspend it in the water.

Once roots form, plant in very sandy soil...water often
