Post subject: Somewhere to stay, away from the clutter

Hey everyone

I'm re-locating to Shanghai in a couple of weeks and looking for a place to stay. My office is walking distance to both Xujiahui and Shanghai Indoor Stadium stations, but I don't really want to stay in Xujiahui because it just seems kinda noisy and expensive.

What places would you recommend that are
- in the range RMB 3-5k per month for a 1BR apartment,
- within 15 min on the metro to Xujiahui/ Shanghai Indoor Stadium,
- a liveable haven away from the noise and clutter (I love people and the city life but I figure in a place like Shanghai I would be overdosed by evening, so I really hope to retreat back to a home where I can keep the windows open and not hear traffic and where the PSI is 10 points lower city average. Ok 5 points)
- I'm female and having had the experience of being mugged safety is very important - but I understand Shanghai in general is terribly safe

I've already signed my contract so please, please don't tell me this place does not exist in Shanghai.

Thanks very much.

Hi there,

I guess you could try to live on Hongqiao road up to zhongshan west road so you could easily be on metro 1 (red line) or line 3&4(purple and yellow) Hongqiao station or Yishan road I guess.
Shanghai is safe but not quiet... My flat has nice double glazed window rent is just above ur min... spacious for the price
As soon as you arrive you could find a cheap hotel like motel 168 and just walk in a real estate ageny and get ur place within 3 days.
Please check www.smartshanghai.com for the map

Good luck with ur flat hunting!!!!

You could try finding a flat off a main road, but I doubt it is going to be very quiet. Shanghai is just noisy - people and traffic! Don't know of any places in those areas that would fit your requirements. Good luck finding a quiet place.

Avoid the main avenues and choose an apartment in the middle of the apartment complex, i.e. not in a building beside the street, and you may have the peace that you want, even living in downtown

Your budget is good even for 2br apt, but having the quiet living in very downtown areas... hmm... that could be tough. I agree finding a place somewhere near Ikea. Just look around that area. It's just one station away from Shanghai Indoor Stadium on line 1.

I can sympathize with you since I've been in Shanghai for five years and everyplace I've lived has been noisy and crowded. Hard to predict noisy neighbors, traffic and horns blaring and construction until you've actually settled.

The noise ordinance that was handed down this past year has definitely quelled the car horns but construction and noisy neighbors still make a lot of racket.

Good idea to find a place off the beaten track away from new construction and busy intersections. I could tell you to find a place in the boonies but you're going to have to go out and feel what's right for you. I've lived in four different areas changing each year but finally found a quiet conplex even though it's near one of the nightclub streets. So quiet you can hear a pin drop.

Try Caohejing which is relatively close to the Shanghai Stadium and Xujiahui.

Nice 4 star Hotels/motels and/or serviced apartments are very inexpensive in Shanghai. Stay in one for a few weeks while you see what is available to move into permanently. I am sure once you are onsite, you will find the perfect or near perfect place for you. Get a local Chinese co-worker to help you find exactly what you want and everything will go a lot easier for you and you will get a lot more for your money than if you try to do this on your own.

The place you are looking for, safe and quiet in Shanghai does exist, now just go out and look for it. Expect the process to take a few weeks, not days. The secret to a quiet place is to find a place that looks onto a courtyard, other building and not a street. Street traffic including noisy cars, trucks, trash removal, deliveries all hours of the night, construction, etc. can easily keep you up all night. Noisy neighbors, that can be a problem anywhere.

Welcome to Shanghai

Ok. I won't tell you.

There are some nice relatively (key word, as it's all relative) quiet lanes in the French Concession however, and it's close to your office.

Thanks - you guys are great!

Would anyone be able to send me contacts for reliable, honest housing agents specialising in these areas (Ikea area, French Concession, Caohejing....)? Thanks much! Smile

Thanks indyshiu. The PM didn't seem to have reached me, unfortunately. I tried to PM you but the message does not register in my "sent" mailbox either. Funny, maybe my PM function isn't working. Could you send it to cabernet_crystal@hotmail.com? Thanks.
