| Post subject: Average salary for General Manager in Shanghai |
I was offered to move with my family (wife and two kids 2 and 4 years old) in order to run our subsidiary in Shanghai and I have no idea about the salary, living cost and etc.
Does anybody know what would be a good salary to live in Shanghai for a General Manager of a company of R$ 2 million USD/year????
I have a very good life in my country and would expect to be very well compensated to make such a big life changing!!! |

This company has a revenue of 2 Million USD/Year?? That's a tiny company. I can't imagine a big salary from them. |

By revenue you mean sales turn-over right ? If so then yes, it is very little by comparison but it depends on the 3-5 yrs growth plan.
A GM (expat) would be anywhere from low 100k USD to higher 250 USD (or more), kids schooling, family health care, car and driver, house allowance of 25,000-50,000 cny / month, some bonus scheme, etc.
Of course there is a huge range and a number of factors abut the above. |

I don't think there is an average, depends on the size and type of business. I pay my GM 60,000 mth plus car. I have heard of some as high as 125,000 and some as low as 30,000 dependent on the business.
As an expat, total comp would be USD$ 100,000 and up depending on business and size. |

Thank you all for your input. I was aware of the company's idea in late july but untill now, I haven't received any formal proposal.
The replies I have received here are pretty close to the information I have previously collected on the internet.
Thank you very much |

here ,the salary is not very high if you dont work for fortune 500 or other big companies but the cost is always very high if you are a expat. |

Tks Kamehamehon!
BTW what do you consider a high cost for an expat? What should I expect in terms of living cost for a family like mine (2 little kids, my wife and I). |

I think RMB 50k/ month would be just enough to support a normal living standard for an expat in Shanghai, the cost part which should be taken into consideration is the accommodation, school for the kids and relocation expenses, you should ask as much as you can. |

Although I didn't receive the formal proposal yet, I know these stuffs (School for the kids, car with driver, accomodation, health care and some other expenses) are up to the company.
Actually, all the earns from the salary would be used for: supermarket, fun, clothes and other personal stuffs...
Having said that, what do you wonder I would expend per month considering a regular life in Shanghai??? |

Leaving the necessary expenses which we mentioned above up to the company, an income of 50k rmb per month will be fair enough for you to have a lot of fun in Shanghai, like you said, supermarket ,fun, clothes and other personal stuffs are not going to cost you a lot even if you are living on a decent expat living standard.
As for an expat family,I think a cost of 20k per month will be on the average and enough to support your life. |
