McCain Said to Choose Alaska’s Palin

DAYTON, Ohio — Senator John McCain chose Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska as his running mate on Friday, shaking up the political world with a surprise pick at a time when his campaign has been trying to attract women, especially disaffected supporters of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Image

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin at a news conference in Juneau, Alaska on August 1, 2008.

In choosing Ms. Palin — a 44-year-old conservative Christian and self-described “hockey mom” who has been governor for less than two years — the McCain campaign reached far outside the Beltway in an election where the Democratic nominee, Senator Barack Obama, is running on a platform of change.

The pick, confirmed by Republicans familiar with the decision, amounted to a roll of the dice, a gamble that an infusion of new leadership — and the novelty of the Republican party’s first female candidate for vice president — would more than compensate for the risk that Ms. Palin could undercut one of the McCain campaign’s central arguments, their claim that Mr. Obama is too inexperienced to be president.

But Ms. Palin ran as a change agent when she was elected as governor of Alaska in 2006, and in a move that might have appealed to Mr. McCain, she took political heat from members of her own party for turning the spotlight on the failures of Alaska Republicans, some of whom had been beset by corruption scandals.

She opposes abortion rights, which could help pacify social conservatives who were wary as rumors swirled that Mr. McCain might pick a running mate who supports them. But she differs with Mr. McCain on a controversial environment issue that centers on her home state: she supports drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve. Mr. McCain’s opposition to drilling — even after he changed positions and began advocating for off-shore oil drilling — has upset many Republicans.

The choice of Ms. Palin was a closely guarded secret, and she flew under the political radar for months as Mr. McCain conducted his search for a running mate. Much of the public discussion in recent days had focused on Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor and Mr. McCain’s one-time rival for the Republican nomination; Gov. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota; Tom Ridge, the former Homeland Security secretary, and Senator Joseph I. Lieberman of Connecticut, the Democrat-turned-independent who was Al Gore’s running mate in 2000.

Michael Grynbaum contributed reporting from New York.

Mc Cain just won the election (though he would win anyway, a blackman, even pro-zionist, cannot be elected in the US). End of the suspense. Well done, Mac!

I think he chose her because it was hard to find a man who wouldn't make him look short.

He could have chosen Sarkozy. We need to get rid of him and I believe he has already be granted American citizenship, under some sort of war witness protection program. Sakozy's horse below, offered by Bush during the "french" traitor's visit to his ranch.

Welcome back!

McCain seems insistent on confirming his idiot status. If he somehow manages to win, the American publeíc will have absolutely confirmed theirs.

McSame came up short again, he would have been better off by picking a tall young black chick to perfectly balance the shortage on his electability.

She is a hot lookin northern redneck who likes huntin, fishin and dippin chewin tabacca.
Her kids names are Track, Willow, Trig, Piper and cousins Earth, wind and fire.
Husband Todd is a pot-smoking slacker fisherman who is on the payroll of BP (no confilt of interest, right?) at $120k/ year while being a stay-at-home-mom.
McCain would have done better to pick Billy Carter or Borat.
Only way to get McC elected now is to make a soft-core porno lesbo movie staring wife Cindy and Sarah. That would at least get Snappy's vote.

Love the Sakozy's horse pix.

the perfect choice really, now both parties are matched equally (1 old school, one new) with only the exception being that which Le Cambronne pointed out: 51% of the country is female, 16% is black.
Gender and race may not have too much affect on ~15% of the voting public, but for the other 85%............

I can hardly wait for the VP debate - Mr. Lawyer vs Miss Congeniality.

"In 1984, Palin won the Miss Wasilla beauty contest, then finished second in the Miss Alaska pageant, at which she won a college scholarship. In the Wasilla pageant, she played the flute and won "Miss Congeniality." -wikipedia

"Biden trained as a lawyer and became a senator in 1973 at age 30, the fifth-youngest senator in U.S. history." -wikipedia

a whole presidential campaign being run like marketing some products....
obama is the 'i have a dream, the american dream...' just because he is black and young?

for god sakes what makes peopel think what has been preached as the democratic system actually works.... it is based on the assumptions of 1. the candidates have been presented in a 'true and fair view' 2. people can vote.
neither is true .

What was he thinking? Go after the 18 million cracks in the ceiling with a freshman gov from Alaska? She can really put him over the top with all of Alaska's electoral votes. She is under investigation for abuse of power. Stick a fork in McCain, he is cooked.

^ I wish. But soon we'll be reading that she's a Vietnam war vet too, and a hero no less. The Repubs seem giddy over the choice from the brief bit of garbage I looked at.

The fork is already in, but it's sticking out of America's ass! My God. How is this race even a race?

One look:

Palin: 2 years of executive experience. Actually running a state, having to balance a budget, deal with real peoples problems.

Biden: Zero in the same category
Obama: Ditto
