You could move to Shenzhen. The problem is seeing how you fit in China. It will change in its own way and so will you. Either your frame of reference will change and you will understand some things better and thus cope with them differently to what you are presently or you will become more introspective. |

To the OP. What problems have you had with the internet? If it is censorship, I am able to help. That goes out to everyone who owns their own computer and is not from China.
It is very simple, all you need is one small, free program. Basically you create a tunnel from inside your computer to a computer in the US. This tunnel is impenetrable with today's computers. It uses a 256 bit AES symmetric encryption program that is the standard of US DoD (department of Defense) communications.
So it would be like burrowing a hole through the earth and popping up in the US w/o having to go through China's "customs" or borders.
I use this everything I am at a publicly accessibly Wifi location as al traffic is viewable as it passes through these (but not with the tunneling method).
So, you can sit on your PC as if you were sitting in the USA!
LMK if anyone is interested in this and I'll put something together to set you guys up! |

find a place where you can rest at any given time. find a compound that is calm and nice, so you have your retreat.
dont invest time in freinds that will leave soon, or are likely to leave soon. it will destroy you on the long run. find the stranded ones.
dont waste time on crap like getting your laundry, going shopping in carefour and getting a random thing from a point that is 5 miles away.
to survive in shanghai you have to pace yourself and keep your energy and time together. let some underpaid chinese dude do your biddings.
find true friends, by joining a gym, language class, going shopping at carefour AT NIGHT (when there is no chinese dude) invest time in the important things.
dont force things.
It doenst work? well then it doesnt work! who gives a ****! dont try to repair things that are meant to be broken.
Someone is in your way? go back home, and see if he is still there the next day. he still is, well then forget it! as easy as that. dont force things.
my biggest problem is to cope with the fact that people dont accept that other people even exist, and the extreme disrespect that comes with it.
But I am working on me.
good luck to you. |
Great advice. Nice post. |

I thought, most of expats are intellects, well educated, civilized ...but seems I was wrong. I don't understand, how come this batch of expats come to one's country (that he/she might know was a developing country) and tell your loves or hates. Who cares? You certainly not able to change the world. The world's norma is not only those in your little brain. Please open your heart, and you will be happy wherever you go. Are you happy in your original country? |

I used to believe China is a 3rd world country, untill I spent some time in Italy...
Or maybe Italy is another 3rd world country?
Rome is like a dirtier version of Beijing with millions of motorcycles trying to annoy you, and Milan is simply Shanghai compact with much ruder locals. Did I mention the river in Florence smells like their pagno? |

Go and live in another country worst than China/Shanghai.
Then you will realise that at least China is not that bad. |

For me it's about who you're with not where you are.
I've been in some utter sh1t holes but with a good crowd of friends and had the best time. Conversely I have been in beautiful wonderful cities but didn't know anyone and really hated it to the point of wanting to go home.
Make friends, increase your social circle..it will make your perception of where you are totally different. It takes time to do this in a new city but be patient and before you know it you will have forgotten your negativity about the city.
Also if you think living in Shanghai is bad compare it to other places that are worse off. Think of all the porr fukkers living in Bagdad, now for them Shanghai is paradise. My point is, think yourself lucky that you're not in a worse situation, somewhere wehre people have a genuine reason to be depressed. |

I used to live in Milan, and can't disagree with you more. Sure, Milan is not like northern Europe (or like Sweden where I'm from), but to even compare Milan with Shanghai... Well, I guess we all see different on things around the world - luckily.

I'm afraid you're right. Certain districts in Milan are worser than Shanghai.

That certainly was long ago that you have lived in Milan. Milan changed considerably the last 10 years... and it was not in the good way.
In many cities in western Europe, whole districts are like third world counties, not just the streets and buildings but also law and order.
Look at Detroit and compare it with Shanghai:
http://www.white-history.com/hwrdet.htm
Probably one of the major reasons why Detroit is dying:

"Detroit, [...] hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1961." |

I can't agree more. Yet, sometimes it seems so hard not to do. |

Nope, moved out from Milan 4 years ago. I lived in the center of the city (or downtown as some like to call it), and I also live in the center here in Shanghai. When I compare the both, I really must say that when it comes to traffic/organization/quality/how people behave in general, Milan was by far much better. Then again, if I compare Milan to for example Stockholm or Copenhagen... yeah, then of course there is a huge diffidence there as well.
Regarding "third world districts" in cities in EU. Sure the EU has its problems here and there, like everybody else. But when you put everything together, the EU is still miles miles a head (which is of course understandable!)

Why is it understandable ? We all started out in Africa with nothing, why does Europe and even the US have it somewhat together while China is pretty bad ? |

The traffic in Milan is better, but I suppose the only reason is the polulation of Milan is only a fraction of Shanghai's. When I took a train from Milan to Rome, it left 15 minutes later than scheduled, though Milan was the starting station. Totally the jurney was 1 hour and 15 minutes behind time table, and the distance is not really that big.
However it might just be an accident.
Anyway, if you try to cross a street in Rome or any other major italian city, you will find Shanghai is not that bad. Italians NEVER wait for green lights, while young Chinese SOMETIMES do.
I'm not saying China is better than Italy. That is of course nonsense. However, nowadays many European cities are just soso, compared to Beijing or Shanghai. |

So you don't think it has anything what so ever to do with the fact that people (in general - the public - the average Joe) here in China only been driving a car for about 10 years?
I mean, how can you even compare how people (in average) drives here in Shanghai with for example Milan?
| Oerlikon wrote: |

So nobody in Italy waits for the green lights? Nobody? But since a few youngster does it here in Shanghai, the crossing of the street is so much better... Well, when I lived in Milan, I was never afraid of crossing the street. Here in Shanghai, you need to be prepared to be run over by who ever and when ever. I used to do a lot of road cycling when I lived in Italy. Do you still believe I do that here?

10 ? You're dreaming, livestrong. Try two and even that is optimistic. Plus they may as well get the damned licenses out of a box of Crackerjack for all the good the "training" is. I watched the Assist take some driving classes, it explained a lot. |
