| Post subject: Internet Speeds in Shanghai |
This shoudl only take 2 mins of your time![/b]
I am interested in moving to Shanghai but need to do some research prior to moving. I'd REALLY appreciate it if a few people could run a few command and post the results. The results will determine whether the job I have planned with be viable as income or not so your data is crucial! This will also help others trying to answer internet questions.
Anyone who helps out I'll be more than glad to give computer assistance to when I arrive!! Or over email now.
There are two speed test I would appreciate knowing the results from. One is at
http://www.speedtest.net/index.php?nojs=1 This site will probably zoom in on your location. I want a test of something around new Your City. adjust the focus box on the map to the right of the "speedomoter" to center on the USA NYC area. Then click the pyramid. Post your results of this PLEASE
-Next goto http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ and select New your City and post your results
(please indicate which site you are using.
Ping test
Click the "start" button in Windows. Goto "run" and type "cmd" (without the " "). this will bring up a Dos box. Please type "ping www.tuprox.com -t" (without the " "'s) and press enter. The longer you let this run, the better. If you could do it prior to going to bed that would be great! When you wake up, press control+c (both together) and that will stop the pinging. This will give you statistics. If you could post the following I'd GREATLY appreciate it.
Packets sent =
Packets received =
Packets lost =
Rount trip
minimum =
Maximum =
Average =
If you cut and paste the below and fill in your numbers I'd really appreciate it.

you can search the threads for these type of results albiet in less detail, but as bad as the numbers are, they also vary much more than you could ever see just by having a few random bandwidth tests.
The key is you don't move to mainland China for the internet access. You can get some level of bandwidth and stability that you can live with, but this is not Korea/Japan/USA, not even close. Just assume you'll get 50kb/s from US sites and be glad once in a while when you get 150kb/s. And, with all the extra servers that your traffic goes through lag times will increase 4x to 10x.
In 2009 the available bandwith to North and South America will double as the new transoceanatic lines are completed, but there's no gaurentee that bandwidth will be available to private customers nor is there anything to suggest that the GFW and lag will be reduced. |
